The Director of Football at AFC Ajax, Marc Overmars, has played under Louis van Gaal at both Ajax and Barcelona and has recently come out to support the Dutch manager, calling his critics ‘crazy’.
Louis van Gaal has been coming under heavy fire for his restrictive style of play and poor results as manager of Manchester United, but there are still a number of people who maintain that it’s just a matter of time for the Dutchman to find the success that he has had at Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Dutch legend Marc Overmars is one of them.
“It’s crazy to criticise him so much already,” Overmars told The Sun, [Via: The Daily Mail] “In football you need patience. They are building a new team. Yes, they have spent a lot of money, but leave him to do his job.
“He has had difficult times before in his career, but always comes through. He will survive and build a very strong team.”
Martial and Depay are key to future success
Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay are two very promising young players that Van Gaal has brought into the club during his reign, and Overmars was quick to tout them as ‘two of the best young talents in the world’ and expressed his belief that they would soon deliver the goods.
“The third ingredient you need is patience, because you don’t get results straight away. Martial is a player we followed very closely, since he was 16 and at Lyon,” Overmars said.
.
“He moved to Monaco for a lot of money and will become a top, top player, we have already seen that. Depay was fantastic last season in our league last season, the top scorer even though he played wide.”
For Van Gaal, Overmars is just one supporter among numerous detractors this season. If he wants to be given the time to reach the level of success expected of him, then he will have to start getting positive results soon, before the patience of the Manchester United fans and board members wears thin.
