Speaking ahead of Manchester Uniteda s clash with Arsenal this weekend, manager Van Gaal has claimed that though he has met a a reasonablea target set by him and the board this season, the challenge is to win the title as nothing less is enough for a club like United.
Speaking about the challenges he faced in his first year in charge at Old Trafford, Van Gaal claimed that the transfers had a volatile effect on the team as several experienced players like Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand left the club and were replaced by youngsters like Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo. However the manager claims that he was able to meet the target set by the board but believes that it is not good enough at Manchester United to merely qualify for the Champions League.
“Of course, because we have set the goals, the board and I, for what was reasonable. I think it was a big challenge.a
“So, I think we did very good, but it is not good enough because, at the end, we want to be champions. Now, at the end, we want to be third because that is still possible. We can put pressure on Arsenal and that is what we want to do on Sunday.”
The manager also claimed that a series of injuries disrupted Uniteda s season as he rarely had the opportunity to field the same team twice. However with more players returning from the medical room, United were able to get their season back on track and are looking to easily qualify for Champions League this season.
