Chelsea FCa s poor run of form in all competitions is something that has baffled one and all, as the defending champions of the Premier League, were ripping teams apart, just a few months back.
However, after just three victories from nine league matches, and a loss to FC Porto in the Champions League, manager Jose Mourinho seems to have take his team back to the basics a doing something that Chelsea FC have done well, over the years a defend.
In the difficult away match at Dynamo Kiev, in Ukraine, Chelsea FC did go on the attack, looking for the winner most of the time, but seemed to have been quite happy with the fact that they would be coming out of the Eastern European country with a point in their bag, as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
“It’s always difficult against Ukrainian teams who have physically strong players, real box-to-box players, strong in the air and at set pieces,” Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho was quoted as saying, in a UEFA press release. “It’s never easy here, and Dynamo also played well defensively.”
The Portuguese reiterated the importance of the defence holding up, when the more creative section of the team is not performing exactly well. He said, “We had no problems in defence tonight, we were compact in midfield and very disciplined tactically. When your attacking players are not flying, scoring goals and killing opponents, it’s very important to be that solid in defence.”
Meanwhile, Dynamo Kiev also seemed intent on getting the one point out of this game, even though they were playing at home. Dynamo manager Serhiy Rebrov was of the opinion that this was always going to be a difficult fixture for the Ukrainian side, and a point was always a good result for them.
“I’m happy with how we played against such a great team. Our players deserve only praise,” said Rebrov. “Perhaps they were too timid in the first half and didn’t believe it was possible to beat these opponents. We played very well in the second half despite allowing them to have a few good counterattacks.”
He also said that these draws have put the Ukrainian side in a good position to get something out of the group, as they have earned draws against two very good teams. He said, “We’ve picked up just one point in both games against our main rivals in the group, Porto and Chelsea. But these teams have such quality that a home draw against them is a positive result.
“We’re playing in the best competition against the best European sides. We were up against the best team in England, the champions, with only great players in their squad. It’s a pity we didn’t win a now we have to get points away from home,” continued Rebrov.
The two sides face each other again, in a couple of week’s time, at the Stamford Bridge, in the return leg of this fixture, and the onus would definately be on Chelsea FC then to go on the attack, and get the three points in front of their home crowd, something that the Stamford Bridge faithful haven’t been seeing too much of, this season.
