Second Placed Ligue One Side Is Closer To Relegation Than The French Title

Paris Saint-Germain’s dominance of the French League means that second placed AS Monaco are closer to relegation, in terms of points, than they are to the league leaders PSG.

AFter the 19th round of matches, PSG head into the holiday seasons sitting pretty at the top of the Ligue One table with 51 points, having never lost a league game and drawn only thrice. Their closest competitor, AS Monaco, are 19 points adrift of the top, which is more than the 13 points that separate them from the relegation zone.

Here’s a picture of the full League One table before Christmas to make things a bit clearer.

The PSG League

Ever since the Qatar Investment Authority took over at the Parisian club in 2011, they have joined the elite group of clubs across Europe like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Manchester United, who can have their pick from the best footballers across the world.

Their current squad boast of the likes of Thiago Silva, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria and Marco Veratti, who are some of the best players in the world and could easily walk into the starting XI at any top club.

Second placed AS Monaco were also a big spending club in 2013, but have become more of a selling club since then, losing the likes of James Rodriguez, Anthony Martial and Radamel Falcao (on loan). Other French clubs simply do not have the financial might to hold on to their best players or invest in players and infrastructure and this is one of the major reasons for the state of the French league.
