Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of World Cup winning midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, with the 30-year-old said to be flattered with interest from England according to Bayern Munich’s chief executive Karl Heinz Rummenigge.
Reports had earlier suggested that Schweinsteiger is not central to Pep Guardiola’s plan, with the Spanish manager willing to offload the dynamic midfielder if the right offer came his way. Pep looks to refurbish an ageing Bayern squad, with many members of the squad entering the twilight of their career.
Schweinsteiger has only a year left on his contract at Allianz Arena, and Manchester United are set to use his healthy relationship with former manager Louis Van Gaal in a bid to convince the 30-year-old to switch allegiances to Old Trafford.
According to Sport1 . , during a press conference earlier today, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that the club are set to hold talks with the midfielder, and also confirmed that Schweini was flattered by interest from England, when quizzed about a potential move for his star midfielder to the Red Devils.
“I was on the phone on vacation with Bastian Schweinsteiger. We will meet when he is back.
I cannot deny the fact that I have understood during these conversations that he is flattered by the interest from England.”
The report further goes on to suggest that, the meeting between club officials and Schweinsteiger will happen “before the weekend.” The timing of this meeting is however very interesting, with Manchester United set to fly for their pre-season tour of America on Monday and Bayern Munich set to announce their 2015-16 squad on this Saturday.
Manchester United have already secured the services of Memphis Depay from PSV and Matteo Darmian is set to fly in on Friday, for his medical ahead of a proposed A?12.9 million move.
