Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has been backed by Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben to become one of the best players in the world.
Depay, 21, was signed by Manchester United for a fee in the region of A?25million from PSV Eindhoven in the summer, following a 20-goal league season with the Dutch outfit on their way to the league title.
Playing his first Champions League game for Manchester United on Tuesday, he scored his first two goals for the club with an impressive brace against Club Brugge that involved a wonderful curling effort.
The winger ran circles around the Bruge defence with his pace and direct running.
Robben backs Depay to become one of the best in the world .
Netherlands and Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben plays alongside Memphis at international level and has no doubts about the attacker’s potential
“He can become one of the top players in the world at Manchester United,” Robben was quoted saying by the Daily Mirror.
“He is already at such a high level, but playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world he will get even better. Manchester United will want to get back to winning trophies, and he will be a big part of that.
“I know that there was Liverpool and Manchester United interested in him, but it was an easy decision for him. There would have been no reason for him to join a club not playing in the Champions League, and Louis van Gaal is one of the best coaches in the world.”
“Memphis can become the complete player under his [Louis van Gaal’s] guidance. It will not be easy, it never is when there are so many new players to settle him, but I think Louis could win the league with Manchester United this year.
Shaw joins Robben in Memphis praise
Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw also joined Robben in praising Depay, with the pair beginning to show signs of forging a strong partnership on United’s left flank.
“It’s his team now, his players, and if the new signings settle quickly, I think it’s possible.”
“He’s working so hard in training,” Shaw said on United’s official website. “He was really trying to get that first goal. Now he’s off the mark, hopefully it can bring him many more goals.
“I think our relationship is starting to build up. We have played a couple of games together and I’m starting to understand how he wants to play.
“It’s great to be playing with him, he can beat a man and he likes the attacking support from me as well, which is something I like to do.”
