River Plate Apologises To Lionel Messi After Fans Spat At Him

The Club World Cup Final saw FC Barcelona beat Argentine club River Plate 3-0, but the aftermath saw a few unruly fans spit at striker Lionel Messi at the airport after the match.

Club Atletico River Plate were well beaten by heavyweight opponents in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, which was widely expected given the gulf between the two clubs. However, an ugly incident took place at Tokyo Airport after the match, where a group of River Plate fans reportedly cornered the Barcelona players, including Argentinians Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi, hurling abuses and even going to the extent of spitting on Messi.

It further escalated with Messi allegedly punching the fan, before teammate Luis Suarez and manager Luis Enrique stepped in to calm things down. The actions of the fans have recently been condoned by River Plate’s officials.

River Plate President, Rodolfo Da Onofrio, also condemned the behavior of his clubs fans, who were most likely angry that the 28-year-old Argentine scored against the club from his native country.
