The former Red Devils midfielder thinks his old side should be eyeing to retain their place in the top four rather than talking up topping the table.

Paul Scholes doesn’t think Manchester United will challenge for the Premier League title next season.

United have cemented their return to the Champions League next season, and Scholes believes they should focus their energies on retaining their spot in the top four.

The Red Devils have already added PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay to their squad ahead of the new campaign, and Ed Woodward hinted earlier today that they would be looking to strengthen further in the summer.

However, Scholes expects Chelsea to be even stronger, and says Arsenal will challenge as well.

“I’d be looking at Champions League again for next year,” he told FullTimeDEVILS. “I think it’s probably a bit early to challenge for the league.”

“We know Chelsea will buy two or three players and you have to say they have been a long way ahead this year.”

“Arsenal look good apart from Monday night (they lost to Swansea) and if they buy a couple I don’t think they will be far away. You have to say City will spend a lot of money as well so there’s a lot of catching up to be done.”

The former United and England midfielder pointed to the loss of key players as the main reason and doesn’t think United have replaced them sufficiently to be in a position to launch a title charge next term.

He added: “When you look at Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand, in their prime they were fit every week.”

“You look now and wonder who the back four is going to be.”

“Jonny Evans is injured or suspended, Phil Jones is always injured, Chris Smalling has had a good run lately but still can pick up the odd injury.”
