“Memphis Depay didn’t happen today”, Fans React As Manchester United Edge Out Tottenham Hotspur [Tweets]

Manchester United started their Premier League season with a win over Tottenham Hotspur in a drab draw which saw Kyle Walker score an own goal to give the Red Devils the win. .

There was very little to separate the two sides and if not for the own goal by Kyle Walker, the game could have ended in a draw. Both the sides were dull and didn’t look at the top of their games. New boy Memphis Depay made his league debut donning the iconic no. 7 jersey recently vacated by Angel di Maria, following his transfer to PSG. The Dutchman, however, struggled in the central role allotted to him and the fans asked for him to be reverted to the wings following a lackluster performance.

The North Londoners also failed to impose themselves on the game following a bright start and failed to trouble the ever-changing defence of the Red Devils. The late charge by Tottenham was, however, arrested courtesy of some solid defending by Chris Smalling and some impressive work by debutant Sergio Romero in goal. The only bright spot in the game was probably United’s new Italian import Matteo Darmian who was confident when in possession and combative when he was looking to win it.

The game failed to live up to it’s expectation, with neither side asserting themselves on the field and the fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns.

Here are some of the best tweets from fans following the game:

Walker’s crisp finish into the back of his own cheese & onion bag means Manchester United are top of the @premierleague

Memphis Depay’s debut-reminiscent of a new cool kid starting at school. Quiet for now but you know at some point he’ll set fire to something

This what I despise. People expecting Memphis to come in and score 3. He’s 21, introduced to a new league, let him settle and develop.

a Liam (@OffsideLiam) August 8, 2015

Looks like we will get the 3 points. But the Totties outplayed us. LvG needs a striker and use Memphis on the flanks. No more Young #MUFC

Memphis was one of the few sparkling things about that first 65 minutes of the PL this season.

Couldn’t understand the Valencia for Darmian But hey! I am sitting in my sofa. Van Gaal on the bench. There is a reason for that ?Y?

Only Tottenham could dominate a game, create all the chances, score and somehow lose.

a Pz (@PascalZidane) August 8, 2015

Trust Tottenham to score the first goal of the Premier League season, and for it to be an own goal.
