David Moyes has revealed he was desperate to sign Real Madrid bound Gareth Bale during his ill fated tenure with Manchester United.

.

Moyes, who guided Real Sociedad to a respectable 12th-placed finish, said in an interview to Sky Sports that he was a big fan of the player and tried to bring him to Old Trafford.

a Firstly, Gareth Bale is an outstanding player,a Moyes said.

a I was desperate to take him to Manchester United from Tottenham, but couldna t quite get him. He had his heart set on going to Real Madrid.

a He was very much on my radar as soon as I went to United.

“He can score goals, can make goals, hea s got speed, hea s physically capable, and I think next year he will be a big star in Madrid.”

Gareth Bale has been linked with a move to Manchester United following reports that he is unhappy in Madrid and admitted last week that 2014/15 season was not up to standards he had hoped for. The 25-year-old Welshman did go onto say that he wants to stay at Real Madrid and prove his worth.

Defending Bale, Moyes said: a It is down to settling in. David de Gea took time to settle at Manchester United, it is not easy. We have to give him time, Bale is no different to anyone else. He is at a great club that will give him opportunity to succeed and I think he will.a

Gareth Bale

Despite having a less than spectacular season, Bale notched up 17 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearance for Real Madrid. He has come under fire by fans and media alike for being far too selfish at times. Manchester United have snapped up Memphis Depay as links to Raheem Sterling refuses to go away suggesting that Manchester United are still looking in the market for an additional winger. Any deal for Gareth Bale looks unlikely though, with the player suggesting he wants to stay and prove his worth.
