The 28-year-old becomes the fifth signing for Manchester United and Louis van Gaal this summer after signing a three-year contract with the Red Devils as a free agent, but is likely to be second-choice

Argentinian international goalkeeper Sergio Romero was officially announced as a Manchester United player in the early hours of Monday, with the 28-year-old shot-stopper signing a three-year contract with the Red Devils.

Romero has worked with Red Devils’ manager Louis van Gaal before – winning the Dutch Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar in 2009 – and has expressed his delight at joining what he describes as ‘the biggest club in the world’.

Louis van Gaal delighted with his fifth signing of the summer

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was happy to be reunited with one of his former players, and is confident that the Argentinian will add to the team. The Dutch manager is quoted by Manchester United’s official website . as saying: “Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper. He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United.

“He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again.a

Romero, too, expressed his delight at joining the English giants, saying: “I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me. Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.a

Manchester United fans less certain about Romero capture

Manchester United fans, however, were a little less certain about the signing, with many questioning what this might mean for the future of Real Madrid target David De Gea. Some expect him to be second-choice keeper, but feel Anders Lindegaard could have filled in for that role just as easily.
