Manchester United will be on the lookout for a new left back in January after first choice Luke Shaw’s devastating injury leaves the position open, with none of the backups performing well.
The devastating injury to Luke Shaw in their Champions League encounter with PSV Eindhoven back in September has left Van Gaal with a huge headache in the Left Back position which none of the players put there, the likes of Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young, are able to provide a cure for.
The Manchester United manager spoke recently about Luke Shaw’s recovery and admitted that he did not have a proper substitute for the talented young Englishman at left back.
“Luke’s rehabilitation is going well but the process can be very slow,” Van Gaal said, according to ESPN FC. “I don’t know if he will play again this season. The doctors won’t take any risks with him, which is good.”
“I was convinced Luke would have a very good season and because of that I didn’t buy a second player for left-back. Maybe we have to buy a left-back in January.”
. A Temporary Replacement
Luke Shaw, even at the age of 20, is showing the potential to become one of the top defenders in Europe if he develops properly. So any replacement made by Van Gaal will only be temporary until Shaw returns to the squad in March next year, when he is expected to recover from the injury.
There are a number of names being associated with a move. The most prominent of which are former Chelsea and Arsenal legend- Ashley Cole, Van Gaal’s ward at Holland- Bruno Martins Indi and former Manchester United mainstay- Patrice Evra. It will be a good chance to get some substantial game time for whoever it is that Van Gaal pursues.
