Manchester City Suffer A Blow As Guardiola Not Interested In Managing Them

Success vs Legacy: Clubs And Managers Are Undermining Stability

Pep Guardiola, the new-gen manager

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has rubbished speculation linking him with the Manchester City job after Manuel Pellegrini’s future at the club is in doubt.

Pellegrini’s side have faint hopes of retaining the title as they are five points behind League leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand and could make the gap as big as eight points. With games running out, it’s unlikely that Chelsea will slip once again like they did in late December. Manchester City were knocked out of the Capital One Cup, that Chelsea won recently, in October by Newcastle and were humiliated further in the FA Cup by Championship side Middlesbrough at the Etihad.

Despite leading his side to consecutive last-16 rounds in the Champions League, their hopes of progressing any further are bleak after Pellegrini’s men lost to Barcelona at home once again. The Manchester City hierarchy are very demanding, so unless Pellegrini delivers a trophy, which is unlikely considering their current situation, the Chilean could be sacked in the summer.

As a result, they have been linked with current Bayern Munich and former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard however commented on the speculation and said that he wants to remain at Bayern for a long time and added that he hasn’t received any offers, “Manchester City? I hope to stay at Bayern Munich for a long time,” the Spaniard told a press conference.

“I have a contract with this wonderful club and aim to fulfil that. I have not received any offers. We will see what happens after next year. I am very happy at Bayern.”

Guardiola led Bayern to two domestic trophies in his first season at the helm after joining them in 2013. Bayern have dominated the league under him and will look to regain their European crown this season. Considering that the crowd have liked the brand of football under the Spaniard and the success, a contract extension is very likely in the off-season if not in the next few months.

For Pellegrini though, it would be somewhat disappointing as he invested a lot in players after he joined the club. For City not to win anything with the players that they have got, it would be something of a crime. In addition, they are making it a notorious habit of not following up a successful season with another one and the last season under Roberto Mancini underlines that fact.
