Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has revealed that he will fight for his place in the team after Wilfried Bony’s arrival in the January transfer window.
Bony was signed from Swansea for a fee of A?25m and is expected to partner Sergio Aguero up front. That has given rise to speculation that Dzeko could leave in the summer if he doesn’t feature regularly for them.
However, the Bosnian said that he is up for the challenge and is focussing on playing at his best instead of the speculation, “Every summer and winter I’m constantly linked with leaving City and I have been here for years now,” he told Patria.
“I will not comment on speculation, because if I did I would have to spend all day doing it.
“I’ve said before and I will it say again, I am only focused on Manchester City and the national team. I am not interested in other speculation, it’s not worth bothering with.”
Dzeko added that City have to sign good players as they are competing at a very top level for silverware. He also said that everyone at the squad will have their chance to prove themselves, “City is a team which wants to win as many trophies as possible so it is quite normal to have a big squad with new signings.
“I really like Bony because I know him from the Premier League, but we all have a place in the team. We will all get a chance to prove ourselves in the remaining games of the season.”
Dzeko had appeared in all but one Premier League game prior to the calf injury he suffered in November that ruled him out for two months. After returning in mid-January, he is yet to complete a single game or score for that matter.
Even before getting injured, Dzeko wasn’t in good form as he had found the back of the net just twice in 11 Premier League games. Sergio Aguero’s injury and Stevan Jovetic’s poor form prompted Manuel Pellegrini to sign Bony in the winter transfer window.
Dzeko started firing for Manchester City around this time last year as he was a key player for them in the last few months of the Premier League [of last season] and ultimately helped his side win the League. However, it will definitely be hard for him to repeat his feats this time with Bony and Aguero’s presence which could lead to a summer exit despite his comments.
