After signing Raul last year, North American Soccer League side New York Cosmos want to make Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard their second big signing in the span of a year according to the Telegraph.

While MLS side LA Galaxy are the firm favourites to sign the 34-year old, Cosmos Coach Giovanni Savarese revealed that his side will try to sign the retired England International if he would be interested in a move to the North American League, a If Steven Gerrard is interested in playing for the New York Cosmos, then we would definitely be interested in a player of his calibre.

a I have to stress that we have not held discussions or negotiations with Steven, but he is a winner, the type of player who gives everything and chases every ball and you never know what can happen.”

The Cosmos coach went on to add that they will try to add players after securing a deal for former Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez last year, a The signing of Raul was a crucial step for us as a club, and he is somebody who will help New York Cosmos at every level, from youth development through to the first team.

a But we are not going to stop with Raul and we will continue to try to add to the players we have here.a

Although they are not in the Major League Soccer, New York Cosmos are trying to compete with the bigger and more lucrative league by making some smart moves of their own. The club have signed some prominent names in World Football like Marcos Senna, but if they want to land Steven Gerrard then the offer will have to be something big. With the MLS becoming ever so competitive each year, Gerrard, who can still do a pretty good job, will want to sign a contract that is both lucrative and enables him to test himself. As a result, the NASL might not be the best option for the boyhood Liverpool fan.

If Gerrard does join New York Cosmos, then his name will be up there with the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Raul (yet to play) and Marcos Senna who are some of the big name players to have represented the American side in the twilight of their careers. The Liverpool captain scored two goals in an FA Cup tie a day ago against Wimbledon. Whichever team he joins, it is certain that he will add some quality to the side as the Whiston-born midfielder is still very much capable of producing some top notch displays.
