Liverpool FC face Leicester City at Anfield on New Year’s Day and the hosts would be hoping to continue their new found momentum into this crucial game where three points can lift them further up in the table, where they currently sit in a mediocre eighth place.

Steven Gerrard is set to return to the team, which has left many questioning his imminent selection. Without their talismanic captain, Liverpool performed wonderfully against Swansea in their 4-1 thrashing of Gary Monk’s side. Gerrard’s exclusion meant Jordan Henderson could perform in the middle of the park and Javier Manquillo started as right wing-back. Both these players did well, especially Henderson who had two assists to his name and could have had a third after a sublime through-ball to Raheem Sterling resulted in the frame getting hit by the latter. Gerrard’s inclusion in the team will see Henderson go back to the right wing-back role, where the player doesn’t seem very comfortable as it isn’t his area of expertise.

a Steven will be straight back in,a confirmed Rodgers.

a Hea s a wonderful player and a wonderful servant to this football club.During my time here, he has been brilliant for me. I have just got to manage his games.

a When I came in here two-and-a-half years ago, everyone talked about whether he could play my type of football and were his legs gone? Arguably he could have been the Player of the Year last year.

a He understands my situation of picking the best team and making it fresh as often as we possibly can. He missed out the other night but he will play against Leicester.a

Meanwhile some Liverpool fans won’t be happy as Dejan Lovren could return to the side if he clear’s a late fitness test.

“Dejan has only been back training in the last couple of days. We’ll see how he is today and then we’ll take it from there.

“If he’s not [fit] for tomorrow, then definitely for the FA Cup game [against Wimbledon].

Liverpool fans will be happy hearing Rodgers also offer an update on the fitness of Daniel Sturridge, who is currently in the United States undergoing a rehabilitation programme on a thigh injury.

He said, “He’s coming back into the country in early January to finalise his rehab here.

“Hopefully at some point in January – the middle to end – he’ll be available to play.”

Martin Skrtel will miss the game as he is suspended after having accumulated his fifth yellow card against Swansea.

Probable Lineup: Mignolet; Can, Toure, Sakho; Henderson, Lucas, Gerrard, Moreno; Lallana, Coutinho; Sterling
