Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that Manchester United and Arsenal are still in with a shout for the Premier League title.
Arsenal are seven points behind the leaders while Manchester United are eight behind. Chelsea are yet to travel to the Emirates and play Manchester United at home, so it would definitely be premature to rule them out with as many as 24 points still up for grabs. Mourinho’s counterpart Louis Van Gaal revealed in a recently concluded press conference that his side can still win the title.
When Mourinho was asked how many teams are involved in the title race, he said, “Ita s four now.
“You see the points difference, and it’s four, not five because you see the gap. There is a gap from four to five and with eight matches to go, ita s a difficult gap.
“The points difference between second, third and fourth makes me think theya re (Manchester United) there.”
Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool have been brilliant in the second half of the season and currently occupy the top three places if the points accumulated since January are to be considered. As a result, they have made a late dash to the title, although Liverpool are more of United’s and Arsenal’s rivals for the fourth spot.
Mourinho went on to add that it’s a period where all that matters is mathematics and how to reach the number of points that will win Chelsea the title. He said that Chelsea need six victories to make sure that other teams don’t have a chance, although the title might be won with lesser wins depending on the form of their rivals, a The number of points are the number of points. Theya ve become consistent in their results and performances.a
a We need six victories and one draw in nine matches. A good situation for us. A situation all the other clubs would like.
“It’s pure mathematics. We need to win six matches and draw one. We haven’t done that yet.
“[It’s] too early [to pick a date for when we will win the league] but if we are champions in last match I’m happy with that.a
Chelsea host Stoke City tomorrow and could go nine points clear of Manchester City who don’t play until Sunday. Arsenal and Manchester United, however, can reduce the gap at the top to four points if they win their games prior to Chelsea’s fixture, be it temporarily.
