Ilkay Gundogan Reveals Why He Rejected Manchester United And FC Barcelona

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he decided to extend his stay at the Bundesliga side because ‘they are one of the biggest clubs in Europe right now’, rejecting interest from a host of European clubs including Manchester United and FC Barcelona.

Ilkay Gundogan’s future has been subject of much speculation this summer with the player having only a year to go to his contract. However, he then decided to extend his contract by another year and the German outfit who have recently let go of long serving manager Jurgen Klopp following a disappointing season in charge.

Gundagon was linked heavily with a move to Manchester United and Catalan giants FC Barcelona with his wage demand a stumbling block for Bayern Munich with the player just recently recovering from a long term injury lay off.

Gundagon has revealed why he chose to reject some of the biggest clubs in Europe to stay at Dortmund.

He said: “BVB are one of the biggest clubs in Europe right now. Or at least on the right path to becoming one.”

The Germany international had said earlier in the week: “I had lucrative offers that BVB knew of and I deliberately turned them down to stay.”

The 24-year-old a a member of the Dortmund side that clinched the domestic double in 2012 a is now looking forward to banish the memories of the tough season the club endured last term, after several years of success under charismatic manager Jurgen Klopp.
