Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos extended his contract with the Santiago Bernabeu outfit earlier today. The 29-year-old signed a 5 year extension that will keep him at the club till 2020.
Sergio Ramos had been linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer as the Los Blancos were not ready to give in to his huge wage demands. The Red Devils faithful had got their hopes up of prizing away one of the best defenders in world football from Santiago Bernabeu. However, it was not to be and Ramos has put pen-to-paper on a a 10 million-a-year deal that will keep him with the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, was reluctant to let the star defender leave, having already sanctioned the unceremonious departure of club legend Iker Casillas. The Spaniard signed for FC Porto earlier in the transfer window and Perez faced huge backlash from the fans with some players also expressing their concerns over the departure of the club legend. With the Real Madrid presidential elections less than a year away, Perez could not risk letting Ramos go as that would have destroyed his already bleak chances of re-election.
Manchester United were reported to be willing to let goalkeeper David De Gea leave the club only if Ramos was allowed to move the other way. But, now that the defender has extended his contract, it is highly unlikely the Red Devils would let go of De Gea this summer. The Old Trafford outfit are resigned to lose De Gea next year to Los Blancos on a free.
Rival fans took to Twitter to mock Manchester United and their fans, for the failure to capture their prime target of the summer.
