Liverpool returned to winning ways after a hard-fought game against the visiting Queen Parks Rangers courtesy a late Steven Gerrard header.
A plane carrying a banner declaring a Rodgers Out, Rafa Ina was flown over Anfield right before the match. The message is an evident of protest developing in some pockets of the Liverpool fan-base against Reds boss Brendan Rodgers after a disappointing season for the Anfield side.
Liverpool are almost certainly going to miss out on Champions League next season and will also finish the season without silverware, making Rodgers the first Liverpool manager since the 1950s to not lift silverware in his first three years in charge since.
When asked about his thoughts on the plane, Rodgers jokingly responded, I thought it was Rafaa s agent in it. Football has a short memory, we sat here last year having nearly won the league and now we have planes flying over so you can do nothing about it. Ia m very fortunate and privileged to work here at Liverpool and as I said before there will be many names linked with the job because of the size and scale of the job to be undertaken here. Rafa Benitez left Liverpool almost five years ago and is presently the manager of Italian Serie A side Napoli. He managed rivals Chelsea as the interim boss in 2012-13 and won the Europa League with the side.
Rodgers was delighted with the three points rescued by his team – and Steven Gerrard. He added, “I would have put my mortgage on Steven Gerrard scoring a penalty but you know the miss will have inspired him more and he got the header and has made a career of big goals like that. He is a truly remarkable player and he deserved the ovation. QPR punished the chances we missed but the spirit my players showed and the attitude they had to keep fighting typified the mentality in the group and they deserved the three points in the end.”
