While reports of a possible move to Manchester United for World Cup winning Dortmund star Mats Hummels continue to circulate, the Red Devils received an unlikely boost on Monday as former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann publically asked Hummels to grab his opportunity to the Old Trafford club.
Hummels, who represented for eight years and made 191 appearances for the club, believes that the 26-year-old will be making the right decision by leaving Dortmund as it a makes sensea for both parties.
“He is interesting to many clubs. Hummels has had some great performances at BVB but a transfer makes sense for both sides,” he said.
Hamann also explained how the World Cup winner has done a everythinga he could at Die Borussen and that he could be the player around whom Uniteda s Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal builds his side next season.
“He has done everything with Dortmund,” Hamann added. “He is at a point where he needs a new challenge. Van Gaal wants him and United need someone who can build up their game.
“His era has come to an end. He has not played as well this year but he is still very successful. For both parties, it would be best if Hummels changes club this summer.”
Hamanna s comments come at a time when Liverpool are struggling in the league and have suffered back to back losses to a couple of their fiercest rivals.
The 41-year-old, who also played for Manchester City, maybe speaking his mind, but ita s not something that would be appreciated by Liverpool or City fans who consider him to be one of their own.
Liverpool are eight points behind Manchester United in the race for a Champions League spot while City, who have played a game fewer that their fierce rivals, are in fourth spot just a point behind them.
City, of course, take on United next Sunday in a clash that will likely have more viewers than just the fans of the two clubs.
