Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has admitted that AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi tried to sign him twice in his career and that he will be open to a move to the San Siro should the Rossoneri approach him.
In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of the clash between the two Italian giants, the Del Piero said, ” Berlusconi invited in 2010 to end my career at AC Milan and it wasn’t the first time he tried to sign me. In 1992 before I moved to Juventus, Milan wanted me but the asking price was too much so I joined Juventus.”
“However, I can tell Berlusconi that I am free agent now should he wish to sign me.”
“He has been very important for Milan as he has chosen the right people to work at Milan and has promoted innovative thinking.”
The veteran also emphasized on sticking with Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi who has been under tremendous pressure in recent weeks with the Rossoneri lying in 8th place, 21 points of league leaders Juventus whom they face on Saturday.
a He seems to have aged a bit but that’s natural although they make the coach’s life complicated in Italy.”
Del Piero was confident about the Old Lady’s title chances and predicted a 2-1 win for them while comparing their rivalry with Milan to the one between two of the greatest tennis players of recent times.
“The rivalry is a bit like the one between [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal in tennis because even though the desire to win and the will to fight is always there, it exists with great mutual respect between the two opponents.”
Speaking about Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan side of the 90’s, he said, “They were a reference point for all the other teams and it is common knowledge that they have changed football. That team was very fast and very well organized.”
On his future, Del Piero said that he has no intention of retiring for at least another year and he if an interesting offer came, he would take it up.
