David de Gea has begun contract renewal talks with Manchester United, his agent Jorge Mendes has confirmed.
De Gea put in another solid goalkeeping display in 1-1 draw at The Boleyn Ground adding to his brilliant form this season that has seen United gain several more points than their performances perhaps deserved, and the new deal will extend his current contract beyond 2016.
He has been linked heavily with a move to European Champions Real Madrid, either in the summer, or next summer on a free transfer. But “super-agent” Jorge Mendes has given United fans a real boost on a situation that was looking increasingly desperate.
De Gea arrived from Atl tico Madrid in 2011 for A?17.8 million and has been touted as a long-term replacement for Spanish legend Iker Casillas, who committed another high profile blunder in their 4-0 loss in the Madrid derby to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Apart from De Gea, Mendes also represents Angel Di Mari, Radamel Falcao, Nani (on loan at Sporting Lisbon), and Victor Valdes as well Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez for Real Madrid.
Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, Mendes said, “I am negotiating with Manchester United about De Gea’s renewal.a It is not true that De Gea has found a deal with Real Madrid. I’m negotiating with Manchester United his extension.”
Despite the signing of former Victor Valdes on a free transfer in January, Mendes reiterated last week that De Gea was content at United as he said, “He has one year left on his contract and I think that he will stay in Manchester. The player will decide, but he’s happy there, at the moment.”
As for Madrid, they are lining up a shock bid for Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois over the summer, according to the Daily Express if they fail in their attempts to land De Gea.
The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper won the league with them last season while he was on loan from Chelsea, and he could be next on Carlo Ancelotti’s list.
