Chelsea FC Target To Be Used As Makeshift Right Back By England Boss Roy Hodgson?

Englishman John Stones has long been regarded as the future for the heart of the England defence, but manager Roy Hodgson seems to be considering the Everton FC man for the right-back position in the national team — at least temporarily.

England’s more traditional options at right-back are Nathaniel Clyne of Liverpool FC and Kyle Walker of Tottenham Hotspur. However, Clyne and Walker have been unconvincing in the position for The Three Lions.

As such, England boss Hodgson seems to be considering playing Stones in the right-back position, according to the Daily Mirror. This however, is not a permanent fix, as Stones’ England future is largely seen to be at the heart of the defence.

.

For now however, England has too many quality centre-backs, which is why the 21-year-old might have to be content with a role on the right of the defence — one he is not entirely unfamiliar with, having played in that position in his younger years.

‘Feeling of playing for England’ overwhelms threat of opposition

In spite of speculation about his position in the team and a possible right-back role, it is believed Stones will start at centre-back in the international friendly against France on Tuesday. He is set to partner up with Chelsea FC man Gary Cahill against Le Bleus.

Recounting his England debut at the Wembley Stadium against Peru earlier this year, the Chelsea FC target said that the feeling is something “really special”.

“I went to watch a game at Wembley before, but to actually play there on my debut makes it a real special place to go,” Stones was quoted saying in an FA press release.

“Our last five games there have all been wins and it really gives us confidence,” he continued. “France have some top players and Olivier Giroud is one who is used to playing at Wembley and has been doing it for Arsenal.

“The feeling of playing for England, though, blanks out the opposition and you just think about pulling on the Three Lions.”

It would be interesting to see whether Hodgson does indeed decide to play Stones in the right-back position in the near future, and whether he fares better than the traditional right-backs Clyne and Walker.
