Chelsea FC pre-season: Champions humbled in New Jersey as 16-year-old nets for the Red Bulls [Video]

Chelsea FC kicked off their International Champions Cup campaign with a shock 4-2 defeat against a second-string New York Red Bulls side at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on Wednesday night

Despite being in the lead at half time and looking in control of the game, a second half Chelsea FC collapse saw the Blues suffer an embarrassing defeat in the first of their four pre-season friendlies in New Jersey on Wednesday night.

Off night for Costa whilst R my produces miss of the summer

Although it was Frenchman LoA?c R my who gave Chelsea FC the lead in the first half with a composed finish with his weaker right foot, the 28-year-old was guilty of missing a gilt-edged opportunity after he failed to adjust his feet quickly enough to turn in a Bertrand Traor cross into an empty net.

Premier League Player of the Year Eden Hazard came on in the second half and had a strong performance, scoring the Blues’ second goal with a neat finish from just inside the box after Brazilian Oscar found him with a well-worked free-kick.

Diego Costa, meanwhile, was guilty of missing three superb opportunities, shooting high over the crossbar on two occasions, and wide when bearing down on the keeper after intercepting a sloppy back-pass. It was an off night for the Brazilian-born Spanish international, and one he can’t afford to have too often once the season proper kicks off in August.

Day to remember for 16-year-old Tyler Adams

After John Terry’s weak back-pass to Chelsea FC debutant Asmir Begovi had allowed Franklin Castellanos to level the scores for the Red Bulls, poor positioning from young defenders Kurt Zouma and Ola Aina allowed teenager Tyler Adams to put the Major League Soccer franchise in the lead.

The 16-year-old is unlikely to forget the night any time soon; the youngster timed and placed his header to perfection in the bottom right corner of Begovi ‘s goal, with the Bosnia & Herzegovina international unable to get a hand on the ball to keep it out.

With Chelsea FC set to take on Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona in the coming week, Mourinho will be expecting a lot better from his team as the Blues continue to prepare for the 2015-2016 season.
