FIFA World Cup 2014: 5 Managers To Watch Out For

With the upcoming World Cup just about three weeks away, we take a look at a few of the managers we should keep an eye out for, in the tournament

While everyoneai??i??s eyes will on the biggest names, such as Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo, the World Cup also creates an intriguing battle of wits and tactics between the managers.Ai??With the tournament just about three weeks away, we take a look at a few of the managers we should keep an eye out for.

NikoAi??KovaA?, Croatia

The youngAi??KovaA? will take the Croats to Brazil and the former captain of the national side would want his side to progress to the further stages of the tournament.Ai??Still young and inexperienced, Niko KovaA? is put under the test of managing the national squad and hasAi??huge expectations at home to rekindle some of the 1998 gloss.. His team is inAi??Group AAi??alongside hosts Brazil,Ai??andAi??Mexico and Cameroon.Ai??Croatia take on Brazil in the World Cup opener on 12th June.

Kovac was called to manage the ‘Vatreni’ after Igor Ai??timac submitted his resignation. In an interview, Kovac stressed that he wanted to ai???set up the squad correctly“Ai??and not make drastic changes to the former manager’s team.Ai??Au Contraire,Ai??Kovac wanted to build from the strength of the squad and maximize on those. it was more of recognizing the teamai??i??s strength and looking for creative ways to maximize it.

Kovac personally evolved from an attacking midfielder into a holding midfielder through his playing days, something which has happened to Croatian prodigy Mateo Kovacic. Kovacic might not be part of the starting 11 initially, but could prove to be an incredibly important player for Kovac, a person who could personally identify with the development of Kovacic (albeit much earlier). Dejan Lovren is another player who might prove to be a very important player for theAi??Vatreni, after having a spectacular season with Southampton.

For the Croatian manager, the services of Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic would be incredibly important. The trio have enough finesse in their game alongside having experience at the top most level. The three have been part of an incredibly season for their clubs- Modric would be part of Real Madrid’s Champions League final, Mandzukic has just won two trophies for Bayern Munich this season and Ivan Rakitic captained Sevilla, the Europa League winners.

Kovac knows that with the players Croatia possesses, the side is very capable of advancing into the business end of the tournament. Viewers can expect the Croatians to cause some upsets if they are able to produce their best football.

Marc Wilmots, Belgium

Marc Wilmots’ appointment as the head coach of the Belgium national team has been one of the most important if not the most important reason behind the recent success of the nation at international football. An attacking midfielder affectionately known as Kampfschwein (War Pig) by Schalke fans, Wilmots has been an imperative reason for Belgium’s reemergence in the international arena and the comeback to the World Cups after a considerable absence of 12 years.Ai??The country is inAi??Group H alongsideAi??Algeria, Russia and Korea Republic.Ai??

Belgium are going into this tournament with the tag of ‘dark horses’. This would have not been considered possible 10 years ago and is a huge feather in the cap for Wilmots, the person who has made them everyone’s favorite underdogs to win the Cup.

Wilmots would have the services of players plying their trade in Europe’s top leagues in the form of Eden Hazard, Jan Vertonghen, Thibaut Courtois,Ai??Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku,Vincent Kompany and Kevin Mirallas among others.

Wilmots chose Manchester United’s young prodigy Adnan Januzaj for the tournament as well after the youngster became one of the better things of United’s dreadful campaign. The Belgium coach even asked Kevin Mirallas to shut up when the Everton man stated that Januzaj was too young to go to the World Cup. This says that Wilmots wants to do all the talking and restrict his players to do the talking solely on the pitch.

The Belgium coach would want the likes of Hazard, Lukaku, Mirallas are entrusted with the job of getting the goals for the team and de Bruyne,Ai??Axel Witsel, Dries Mertens, Steven DefourAi??and Maroune Fellaini (someone he expects to shine at the competition after a bad season for Manchester United. Wilmots has in fact blasted the Premier League club for playing Fellaini out of position) to handle the midfield and dominate the heart of the pitch along with contributing with the attack. The likes of Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen,Ai??Toby Alderweireld and Thomas Vermaelen would be the ones defending for the national side and have the important job alongsideAi??Thibaut Courtois to not concede goals.

Belgium have a lot of attacking flair which is balanced out with a good midfield and a solid defensive line-up. However, the lack of experience at the top-international level is the biggest concern for the side which Wilmots has acknowledged claiming his young side were “a little too hungry” and calling that ‘his fear’. Because its very easy to succumb to pressure at the top level, Belgium are vulnerable to that, as they boast an incredibly young line-up. But on the flip side, the side has incredible talent within the ranks and Wilmots has enough at his disposal to make Belgium a devastating side which might surprise everyone by reaching as further as the semi-finals and maybe even beyond.

Louis van Gaal, Netherlands

Van Gaal has been part of the limelight for a while now, mainly because of the links to Manchester United. The Dutch manager has taken over the reigns of the club, but his main focus for now would be to lead the national side in the World Cup and would be targeting the trophy. Netherlands are inAi??Group BAi??alongsideAi??Chile, AustraliaAi??andAi??Spain.Ai??

In the 2010 edition of the tournament, we saw Netherlands approach a safe strategy in games. This didn’t mean that they parked the bus or solely capitalized on the opposition’s mistake but they did not go all out attack and make themselves vulnerable in the second or final third of the pitch. The style has not really changed under Louis vanAi??Gaal, but Holland have dominated the matches more by being more offensive.

Van Gaal has been seen as employing the 4-2-1-3 formation with wide forwards/wingers, a striker, a number 10 and two midfielders who provide balance to the side. Arjen Robben, Robin Van Persie, Jermain Lens, Wesley Sneijder, Nigel de Jong would be the ones occupying these roles. Van Gaal would be happy with the depth in the squad as quality players likeAi??Rafael vanAi??derAi??Vaart,Ai??Klaas-JanAi??Huntelaar,Ai??Ricardo vanAi??Rhijn can be called from the bench to make an impact.

However, the one problem with the squad is that it is in a bit of a ‘transition phase’ asAi??21 of the 30 preliminary squad players have fewer than 15 caps for the national team (seven of the nine defenders Van Gaal called up are 23 or younger and defence is usually a department where experience is most crucial)Ai??and most of the remaining men are nearing the 30 year mark, which is suggestive of ‘weak legs’. However, the experience of the 30+ men would be imperative for the Dutch to make a successful bid to be champions.

The highly self-absorbed man, who said after being appointed Ajax manager ‘Congratulations on signing the best coach in the world’ goes into the World Cup with a lot of expectations. The 2010 World Cup runners up would want to do one better and emerge winners from this edition of the most prestigious national football competition and a lot would depend on how Van Gaal manages the team.

Jorge Sampaoli, Chile

The man known to be a tactical guru would have his side observed by spectators and scrutinized by pundits who would want see the Chile manager employ these tactics on a more glamorous stage. Chile are part ofAi??Group BAi??alongside aforementionedAi??NetherlandsAi??and haveAi??SpainAi??and AustraliaAi??as the other two teams in the pool.

Sampaoli has switched between a 3-4-3 and a 4-3-3 formation since he took over the reins of the national team in Novemeber 2012 qualifying and during friendlies. However, irrespective of the formation, Chile play in a more-or less similar way.

Movement is an essential part of Chile under Sampaoli and pundits have often characterized the nature of Chile’s attack as ‘organised chaos’. Wide forwards often cut through inside and attack from there, but usually they do their primary job of providing width to Chile’s game. Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez is going to be imperative to Sampaoli who Chile would be counting on to supply with goals. Wingbacks are an important part of Sampaoli’s strategy and MauricioAi??Isla’s advancing role along the wide line clearly illustrates it.Ai??Midfielders sometimes move beyond the strikers and make the opposition’s job even tougher as there are too many attackers to deal with. Arturo Vidal, especially, does an exceptional job of this.Ai??One of the most important players for Sampaoli is MarceloAi??Diaz who plays the role of a deep-lying playmaker. He helps his team keep possession in the heart of the pitch and tries to start attacks and helps in keeping up the tempo of the game.

The fact that Chile can create this effective attacking chaos lies on the fact thatAi??the players position themselves well to be flexible in their attacks without being vulnerable defensively.

Chile would be hoping they can progress till at least the quarter-finals stage and then hope for even more but anything less than the round of 16 would be a little disappointing as they possess a number of world-class players and a manager who knows how to utilize their massive potential.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, Brazil

“Big Phil,” who previously led Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002,Ai??goes into the tournament with the Brazilian side which has been labelled ‘favorites’ to win the World Cup being played at home. The home team is part ofAi??Group AAi??which hasAi??Croatia, CameroonAi??andAi??Mexico.

Scolari inherited the Brazilian team from Mano Menez and did some sifting and fine-tuning to imprint his philosophy. Scolari’s squad for the tournament had some guessable shocks, and some other question marks raised. Kaka missed out on what he would have thought would probably be his last World Cup alongside the other twoAi??veterans, Ronaldinho Gaucho and Robinho. However, one big shock was Luiz ignoring Atletico Madrid’s Miranda and Filipe Luis- both of them enjoyed a spectacular season with Atletico. The duo recently won the title with the Spanish club and will be part of the Atleti side facing Real Madrid in the Champions League finals. Big Phil snubbed Miranda and chose Napoliai??i??s Henrique as the fourth-choice centre back. People were not forthcoming with the Henrique decision andAi??1970 World Cup legend Tostao saidAi??‘Itai??i??s a terrible choice’

But majority of Scolari’s team has been an expected one and boasts of intimidating figures. By beating Spain in the FIFA Confederations Cup final last year and emerging winners at home, Big Phil has proven yet again that his tactics and management work supremely well and can eventually result in Brazil being crowned the World Cup Champions. Scolari has selected a strong group of defenders (which could prove to be one of the best of the tournament)with the likes of David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, Dante, Maxwell, Maicon and Marcelo. Ai??Neymar, Hulk and Fred would be leadingAi??SeleAi??A?o’sAi??attack and the trio possess a lot of creativity and goals in them to take the side all the way. Oscar, Hernanes, Willian and Fernandinho provide Scolari with options of attacks from the midfield as all of them pitch in with goals.Ai??Wolfsburgai??i??s Luiz Gustavo is quite an underrated player but Scolari understands what the midfielder does for a team- creates the tempo of the game by linking up with attackers and unlocking defences.

A major conundrum for the side is that they are largely reliant on Neymar’s goals up front as Fred and Jo, the two players who play in Brazil at club-level, might not have enough in them to trouble top level defences (However, Fred scored five goals at the Confederation Cup and emerged as the top scorer of the tournament alongside Fernando Torres). But at 30 years old, Fred is still relatively new to the international game and has fewer caps than 22-year-old Neymar.Ai??The SeleAi??A?o always have high expectations on them but there is more pressure on them as they are hosting the tournament.

But this team has every chance of winning the tournament as Scolari has already given a little preview in the Confederation Cup by winning the whole thing, at home. Not to forget, Brazil have experienced men in the form of David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Dani Alves and Ramires; and players like Oscar, Willian, Neymar, Fernandinho and GustavoAi??playing nerve-wrecking football in competitive leagues. Scolari has tried to assembleAi??a ‘complete squad’ and would make sure his side build on their strengths in defense and free up the creative players to hurt the opposition in the final third of the pitch.
