Liverpool have had a great start to this season. The club has dropped out of the top 4 just once this entire season and immediately managed to climb back to the fourth spot. Granted that after managing to be top on Christmas Day, the Reds slipped to the fourth place on New Yearai??i??s Day, still, it doesnai??i??t take away from the immense progress they have made this season. Rodgers has to make additions in the winter in order to sustain that.
Liverpool have the weakest squad among the clubs chasing the Champions League next season. The club lacks depth terribly in the squad. Injuries made this cause even worse, but even without the present players being ruled out, the Reds donai??i??t have much to show for the quality and depth in the side.
Rodgers needs to add a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a left winger and a full back to the side. Liverpool need cover for Lucas, who is out on the sidelines for about two months. The club needs a player to cope with the Brazilian’s loss. There were links suggesting the club’s interest in Bayern Munich’s Nigel de Jong, but nothing concrete has been done so far.
The Reds need someone on the left wing so that Coutinho can play in his natural position. Coutinho is a typical No.10, who prefers to play right behind the striker. Victor Moses has failed on his loan from Chelsea and Coutinho has hence been deployed as a left winger for the club. Links to Mohamed Salah initially in the window suggested that the Egyptian would be close to signing for the club early on in the window. However, Mourinho’s late and effective hijack of the player has resulted in the 21 year old heading to Chelsea. Liverpool are now stronly linked to Valon Berisha, the highly ratedAi??Norwegian midfielder who plays for Red Bull Salzburg.
Brendan Rodgers has most recently revealed that Glen JohnsonAi??has been struggling with injuries in recent weeks and now faces an indefinite stint on the sidelines.Ai??Johnson has, in any case, lost a lot of flair this season and has looked very uncomfortable in every match he has played. The England player needs an understudy and Liverpool have been linked with Barcelona player Martin Montoya. There have been no developments in that front as well, but at least Rodgers knows the area of concern and is targeting someone to cure that.
