Juventus have revealed that Manchester United did hold talks with Arturo Vidal over the summer but the deal did not materialize for Van Gaal due to the midfielderai??i??s injury concerns.
Giuseppe Marotta, Chief Execuitve at Juventus has confirmed that negotiations were on with United over the World Cup hero but the Manchester club eventually decided against investing in a player with a dodgy knee injury. He however confirmed that Juventus are more than happy to hold on to the Chilean play-maker who has been instrumental for Juventus in recent years.
“The injury influenced his departure, even now he doesn’t have the best physical condition. For our part, however, there is the clear desire to keep him because we renewed his contract.”
The Juventus chief also clarified that Vidal wants to stay in Italy with the club and will not be leaving in January.
“He wants to stay with us”, confirmed Marotta.
After months of rumours linking the Chilean midfielder with Manchester United, the details surrounding the transfer are finally out for all to analyse.
The 27 year old midfielder has been suffering from a troublesome knee injury that refuses to go away. Vidal was also doubtful for the World Cup but staged a late come-back and led Chile to the Round of 16 where they lost in penalties to the host nations. Ever since the arrival of Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United, there have been strong rumours suggesting Unitedai??i??s interestAi?? in Vidal. They midfielder himself accepted that it was flattering to be linked with such a big club but strangely the deal never materialized. There were suggestions that United were not too keen on signing the player due to his injury concerns and this has proven to be true.
At the age of 27, Vidal is supposed to be at the prime of his career. However a niggling knee injury, one that still plagues the player, could be catastrophic for the Chilean. To invest a 4 to 5 year hefty contract plus a heavy transfer fee on a player who might spend a lot of time at the sidelines definitely qualifies as bad business. And this is something Van Gaal and Ed Woodward were aware of in the summer and hence consciously stayed away from the deal.
Vidalai??i??s injury concerns can be compared to that of Radamel Falcao. However Manchester United managed to sign up Falcao on loan with an option to buy if the Colombian is able to prove his worth at Old Trafford. Such a deal makes sense for Manchester United as it does not tie the club down to a liability. However with Vidal not being available on loan, refusing him might turn out to be a decision that Manchester United do not regret in the months to come.
