Chelsea FC drop points at home against West Ham United as they miss their chance to close their gap with Arsenal.
This was a must win game for Chelsea as they had the opportunity to close down their gap with Arsenal, who dropped points against Southampton. But Jose Mourinhoai??i??s men were held to a goalless draw by their London rivals as Hammersai??i?? goalkeeper Adrian shined on the night.
Chelsea went into this match as the clear favourites as they looked to maintain their run of seven match winning streak, but Sam Allardyce out witted Jose Mourinho tactically in this game. The home side created numerous opportunities right from the start and had an incredible 39 shots compared to just one by West Ham. 9 of those shots were on target for the Blues, but Adrian in West Ham goal was in inspired form and kept out Chelsea throughout the match.
West Ham dropped deep and got men behind the ball to make it difficult for the home side. Having lost seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions, Sam Allardyce had little option but to park the proverbial bus in front of the goal and in the end it worked for them as they were awarded with an unlikely point. This draw has helped them to jump up to 18th in the table, above Fulham and Cardiff, who lost their respective matches in this gameweek. They will now face Swansea City at home in their next match and positive result in that game could well pull them out of the relegation zone.
Chelsea on the other hand will now face Manchester City in an all-important battle at the top in their next outing. Considering Manchester Cityai??i??s current form, it will be tough for the Blues to get anything out of that game at the Etihad stadium.
Jose Mourinho was enraged by West Hamai??i??s tactics in this match and insisted that the Hammers played football from the 19th century. Ironically the Chelsea manager was critical about West Ham parking a bus, a tactics which even his side has used in the past.
“A football match is about two teams playing and this match was only one team playing and another team not playing.
“I told Big Sam and I repeat my words: they need points and, because they need points, to come here and play the way they did, is it acceptable? Maybe, yes.
“I cannot be too critical, because if I was in his position I don’t know if I would do the same. Maybe.
“At the same time I told him also this is not Premier League, this is not the best league in the world, this is football from the 19th century.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho threw everything he had at West Ham but failed to break them down.
“The only (other) thing I could bring was a Black and Decker (tool) to destroy the wall.” ai??i?? Mourinho added.
The Chelsea boss also complained about the time wasting tactics of West Ham, although he believed that those tactics served Sam Allardyce perfectly.
“They wasted two minutes every time they kicked off and the referee gives the wrong message when he gives just four minutes but it is what it is.
“He was laughing. His objective was won: come here and take a point. It was not to come here and play good football or to try to win or to feel part of the quality of the Premier League.
“He takes the point. After that he’s a happy man and I’m a sad guy.” ai??i?? He explained.
Mourinho was however pleased with the efforts of his players and praised West Hamai??i??s goalkeeper for keeping his side in the match.
“With my players, I’m happy.
“My team tried everything. Their goalkeeper saved a lot, but they also had other players without gloves who saved a lot.
“They played with five defenders; they looked more goalkeepers than defenders.” ai??i?? Mourinho said.
As Chelsea struggled to score past West Ham, Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspurs 1-5 on the night and went to the top of the table and Mourinho believes that the new league leaders will head into their match against Chelsea as the favourites.
“For me it’s not a surprise.
“We go there next Monday and the result at this moment is 0-0. Are they favourites? Yes. Are they even favourites to score again four, five, six goals? Yes.
