U-16 Asia Champions Trophy : Dheeraj, Lalrinzuala, Thapa & Chakraborthy Leading The Way For AIFF XI

AIFF regional academy, Kalyani currently represents India in the U-16 Asia Champions Trophy. AIFF XI is participating in this tournament for the first time and it presents an opportunity to evaluate the progress of the academy boys in an international stage. There are 12 teams participating in Fam Frenz U-16 Asia Champions Trophy, it’s a club level tournament while some nations are represented by their junior national team. Teams are divided into two groups, with AIFF XI is pitted along with PVF – Vietnam, Harimau Muda – Malaysia, Home United – Singapore, Frenz United – IndonesiaAi??and Timor-Leste U-16 National Team.

AIFF deserves some credit for giving exposure to an exiting batch of youngsters. The same bunch has played admirably well in age group tournaments before. Presenting the AIFF regional academy boys an opportunity to test their mettle in different conditions is surely going to help in the developmental process.

Competing against the likes of Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Timor-Leste in different conditions is a valuable learning experience and exposure for AIFF XI. As head coach Goutham Ghosh mentions, its not just about winning, player development is more important and India is going in the right direction.

When it comes to player development, performance is also a part of it. AIFF XI has so far secured a win and two draws. There were few games, where the youngsters lost the plot in the last few minutes. If it was fatigue and tiredness which costed 3 points against Indonesia, AIFF regional academy boys improved on those aspects when they faced Vietnam and other opponents. The fighting spirit and the playing style adopted by the youngsters are a treat to watch. The youngsters aren’t afraid of the opposition, and plays a confident possession based attack oriented game irrespective of the opposition.

When it comes to players, there are a few stand out performers who are expected to improve the standards of Indian football in the coming years. TheHardTackle gives their take on few players who have caught their attention in this tournament.

1. Dheeraj Singh, Goal keeper – AIFF XI

Dheeraj Singh has been an outstanding performer for the AIFF regional academy boys. His performance has drawn the attention of some of the top clubs in Europe which indicates the level of performance has put in. Malaysia U-16 head coach had S. Balachandran in a chat with THT’s Joseph George had pointed out that he is the best goal keeper he has seen at this age. Dheeraj Singh, is blessed with supreme reflexes and outstanding shot stopping abilities. 15-year-old goal keeper is agile between the sticks and he is confident about his abilities. Even though his decision making and organization of defence needs some improvement, Dheeraj Singh is definitely the one to watch out for in the future.

2. Jerry Lalrinzuala, Left Back – AIFF XI

Jerry Lalrinzuala reminds Indian Football fans of Roberto Carlos. He is full of energy and enthusiasm running up and down the left flank. He dribbles past the opponents with ease and his link-up play in the opposition half is a treat to watch. Jerry Lalrinzuala is a primary outlet for AIFF XI when they switche from defence to attack. The stand out feature in his game play is his ability on dead ball situation. His corner kicks creates panic in the opposition defence with perfect flight and swerve; while his free kicks are inch perfect, and does not give any chance to the goal keeper if on target. Defensive aspects of his game needs some fine tuning to reach the top level. If Jerry Lalrinzuala can consistently deliver those high quality set pieces, AIFF regional academy has unearthed a jewel for Indian Football.

3. Anirudh Thapa, Central Midfielder – AIFF XI

The all action central midfielder is the live wire of this AIFF XI. Goutham Ghosh has adopted a rotational policy with the captains arm band to develop the leadership qualities in his players. But if you take a look on the ground, there is only one natural leader on the pitch and that is Anirudh Thapa. He carries the team on his tender shoulders, be it defensive work or supporting the attack – Thapa is an all round presence on the field. He not only performs on a consistently top level, but also gets the best out of his colleagues. Tackling, positioning, creativity, vision, passing all these skills can be attributed to the deep lying play-maker. Anirudh Thapa can control the tempo and dictate the pace of the game and that tells volumes about his performance, even at a young age. So far, Anirudh Thapa has been the best player for AIFF XI in U-16 Asia Champions Trophy.

4. Prosenjit Chakraborthy, Attacking Midfielder – AIFF XI

Supremely talented and gifted player on the ball, but lazy and careless without it – Prosenjit Chakraborthy is the main outlet for goals in this AIFF XI. In a tournament where star striker Krishna Pandit has failed to live up-to the expectations, it was Prosenjit Chakraborthy who has delivered the goods for AIFF regional academy. The attacking midfielder is a skillful player who can create and score goals with ease and precision. He is the leading scorer for AIFF XI, ahead of striker Krishna Pundit and Nijwam Muchahary says volumes about his end product. On the other hand the lazy and careless attitude of Prosenjit Chakraborthy needs to be addressed immediately. His positioning and defensive aspects of the game, need a lot of improvement and then only he will be in a position to fulfill his potential.

These 4 players have stood out with their performance in U-16 Asia Champions Trophy, but there are players like Krishna Pandit and Amit Tudu who are highly rated and widely regarded as the best in this current batch. They might have missed the trick in this tournament, but on the whole we can expect them to progress in a similar manner to the above mentioned four players. AIFF is taking care of the overall development of players in a very good manner, by rotating the squad based on the needs and demands while keeping the core of the team intact. This tournament has shown the Indian youngsters aren’t afraid of the opposition or the conditions, with time and experience these guys are expected to lead Indian Football into greater heights.
