While a 6th place finish is hardly the worst result, especially considering that last seasonai??i??s title winners Man United finished one place below them, poor management has resulted in a season of disappointment for the Tottenham Hotspur.
In many ways, 2013-14 has been a season to forget for Tottenham Hotspur fans. A 6th place finish is hardly the most depressing of results, especially considering that last seasonai??i??s title winners Manchester United actually finished one place below them. But this was a season of extremely high expectations, where fans were looking at the host of new and exotic signings to guide them into a Champions League spot. Unfortunately, poor management by Daniel Levy, Franco Baldini, Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood has resulted in a season of disappointment for the Spurs faithful.
Optimistic Start
The mood at Tottenham Hotspur at the start and end of the season could not have been more different. While the sale of fan favorite Gareth Bale to Real Madrid was disappointing, the A?100 million transfer kitty it provided had Spurs fans dreaming of a Champions League spot, and perhaps even a Premier League title challenge. Alas, as has been seen time and time again in football, major overhauls to any line-up generally require time for players to gel. At the start of the season, Spurs pulled off 4 wins out of their first 5 games, though 2 of those were 1-0 wins where the solitary goal was a penalty. And they lost the one game to a top level opposition, a 1-0 loss to Arsenal. But the wins helped the fans keep the faith, as they waited for that moment when their team would finally click and start playing beautiful football.
Inability To Beat The Big Boys
Unfortunately, that moment never came. The team kept stuttering forward with more penalty-assisted wins and lackluster performances against the top sides. By early November, Tottenham had drawn Chelsea and Everton, and lost to Arsenal. Then came along Manchester City, who absolutely decimated Spurs in a nightmare game that ended 6-0. There were a startling number of individual errors in defence, and the attack looked ineffective. Despite keeping a lot of possession in Cityai??i??s half, Spurs simply couldnai??i??t figure out a way to get the ball into the opposition goal. In their next League outing, Spurs played Manchester United (who have had problems aplenty of their own this season) to a 2-2 draw.
Why AVB Really Got Sacked
And then there was Liverpool. What was expected to be a close match between two top-4 spot contenders, quickly turned into a one-sided dismantling. While Liverpool were at their absolute attacking best, Tottenham looked like a headless chicken. Andre Villas-Boasai??i?? high back line played right into the hands of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, and Spursai??i?? central midfield trio of Sandro, Paulinho and Mousa Dembele offered little creativity in the middle of the park. When the smoke cleared, Tottenham had suffered a 5-0 thrashing, and the players didnai??i??t look like they would recover too quickly. Andre Villas-Boas had been thoroughly out-witted by Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers.
It takes time for new players to come together. Unfortunately, time is the one thing managers in the Premier League donai??i??t have. Daniel Levy decided Villas-Boas was not the man to lead Tottenham forward, and the Portuguese was asked to leave. In his place, Spurs appointed Tim Sherwood, who would go on to manage the team till the end of the season. Like any managerial role, football managers are expected to show immediate results. Or if they need time to demonstrate these results, they should be able to convince their various audiences that matters are progressing and results are around the corner. Andre Villas-Boas could do neither.
Compare him to his mentor, Jose Mourinho, who has also spent close to A?100 million this season (though he similarly recouped a major chunk through player sales) to finish in the exact same position where they finished last season (3rd). His handling of the owner, media and fans is so superior, he has his audience convinced that this has been a season of immense progress, and next season will be far better. As long as he gets to sign a A?30 M striker or two, that is.
Itai??i??s a skill Villas-Boas needs to pick up, if he wants to manage a Premier League side ever again.
Why Tim Sherwood Was Never The Long Term Solution
Tim Sherwoodai??i??s entry was a breath of fresh air for the club. He shook things up, and switched to a far more direct 4-4-2 formation with Emmanuel Adebayor finally getting some play time, being paired up front with Roberto Soldado. And the early results were very positive, with wins over Southampton and Manchester United lifting the Spurs fansai??i?? moods. The 1-0 penalty-assisted wins were replaced with better looking scorelines (3-0 over Stoke City, 3-1 against Swansea).
But it was short-lived joy. As was the case under Villas-Boas, Sherwoodai??i??s sides could not hold up against the best of oppositions. A 5-1 defeat to Man City at White Hart Lane, 4-0 to Chelsea, 1-0 to Arsenal and 4-0 to Liverpool saw Tottenham continue their horrible form against the teams they were supposed to be battling for a top-4 spot.
Tim Sherwood is not a poor coach, and in fact has earned (and flaunted) a 59% win ratio, the highest of any Tottenham manager in the Premier League era. Unfortunately, like Villas-Boas, people skills are not his forte. He has been quick to blame everyone from the players, to the owners, to the unrealistic expectations surrounding the club for their fortunes. Rather than projecting an impression of transition and progress, he has declared that the club is exactly where it should be. Thatai??i??s the last thing any clubai??i??s owners want to hear. So out goes Sherwood.
Amidst all this doom and gloom, there have been some silver linings:
Silver Lining 1: Improved Squad
Despite the cloud of negativity around White Hart Lane, there are some positives from this season. Firstly, the current squad is definitely an improvement over the one that ended the 2012-13 season (missing Gareth Bale aside), even if they are yet to truly deliver as a team. Players like Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Etienne Capoue are excellent additions to any squad and, now that they are better acclimatized to the Premier League, they will come back much stronger next season. This season has also seen the emergence of talented players from the youth academy in the form of Nabil Bentaleb and Harry Kane.
Silver Lining 2: Transfer Kitty from Player Sales
Another positive is that the new manager that signs on this summer is likely to have a decent transfer war chest himself. Letai??i??s keep in mind that despite the number of players brought in, there was no real net expenditure (thanks largely to the sales of Gareth Bale, Steven Caulker and Jermaine Defoe). Daniel Levy can therefore afford to provide a tidy amount for the new manager to invest, and they will also make some money from player sales. Besides the players that featured regularly in the 2013-14 season, Tottenham have a number of players returning from loan stints who have improved their value over the past year. These include talented players like Jake Livermore, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Tom Carroll and Lewis Holtby, who should fetch decent bounties. And with the emergence of Nabil Bentaleb, Spurs can also consider letting go of atleast one holding midfielder out of Sandro, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Mousa Dembele, all of whom would typically be played in one of two holding midfielder positions. Of course, a lot depends on the new manager, and his vision for the teamai??i??s future.
Silver Lining 3: Lamela Likely To Shine In Coming Season
And a new manager could yet turnaround the downward trajectory of the enigmaAi??Erik Lamela. There is no doubting that Lamela has the inherent skills needed to succeed in football, but he will need the right guidance at this critical time in his career. If itai??i??s provided to him, there is really no reason why he shouldnai??i??t go on to live up to the massive expectations that were loaded on his shoulders when he arrived in England. At 22 years of age, time is definitely on his side.
Biggest Liability
The squad was reinforced in nearly every area of the pitch last summer. But with both Vlad Chiriches and Jan Vertonghen being injured for large periods of the season, Younes Kaboul got an unexpected 11 starts. And he was by far Spursai??i?? greatest liability everytime he stepped on the pitch. Out of those 11 games, he managed to get red carded in two (against Chelsea and West Ham). He also managed to score an own goalAi??extremely early in the Liverpool game in March. Kaboulai??i??s presence in the line-up is a sight Spurs fans will hope to avoid in the future.
Most Professional Exit in Football
Amid all the drama during the season, people seem to have completely forgotten one player: Heurelho Gomes. The goalkeeper who played a huge role in Spursai??i?? 2009-10 season, didnai??i??t get a single minute of game time this season as he fell behind in the pecking order to Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel. The 33 year old Brazilian, who is departing the club now, deserves credit for being a thorough professional and not broadcasting his discontent at any point. A thorough professional, this man.
Comeback Kid
Thereai??i??s never a dull moment when Emmanuel Adebayor is concerned. Never one for a straight-forward career path, Ade had another roller-coaster season this time around. After being sidelined by Andre Villas-Boas, who favored A?26 million Soldado, Adebayor made a comeback in the second half of the season. And what a comeback it was. Adebayor and Eriksen finished the season with a joint top goals + assists tally (15), despite Adebayor getting 3 fewer starts than the Danish playmaker. Re-integrating Adebayor into the Tottenham side is possibly the biggest contribution to the club by Tim Sherwood.
The Future
With managers likeAi??Southamptonai??i??s Mauricio Pochettino and Ajaxai??i??s Frank de Boer being evaluated for the hot seat at White Hart Lane, the teamai??i??s fate next season is very unpredictable. Whichever manager comes in will surely get to bring in a few players of his own, but his primary task will be to get the most of last summerai??i??s signings. Only one thing is for sure: with Daniel Levy at the helm, the new manager should work with the assumption that he needs to show progress fast, else he too will be shipped off like Villas-Boas and Sherwood.
