Observers of Indian football have, over the years, often complained about I-League clubsai??i?? lethargic approach to youth development. It is no secret that most Indian top-flight clubs frown at the idea of investing in the development of young footballers. Most of them prefer to replace players from the transfer market, rather than from within the club. In recent years, however, some significant improvement has been witnessed from some of the clubs in this respect. Shillong Lajong have been one of the top performers in the last few seasons, amongst the top division clubs, when it comes to grooming youngsters at the club. The club has always shown an encouraging attitude with relation to investing in youth, and is slowly starting to reap the rewards of its investments.
Thangboi Singto has been at the club for well over half a decade now. The Manipuri tactician took over the role of head coach last year after the ouster of Desmond Bulpin, and under his stewardship, things have greatly improved at the club. One of Singtoai??i??s biggest achievements so far, has been giving top-flight football exposure to some of the clubai??i??s talented youngsters. His continued faith on the youth players is a source of great encouragement to the latter. The fact that the Redeem Tlangs and the Shaiborlang Kharpans havenai??i??t compromised the quality of the team, also illustrates the ilk of players being produced by the club. In fact, Tlang, one of the most prominent youngsters in the senior side, has played crucial roles for his club in some of the games he has featured in. Singto has built his side on players in their early 20s, which, considering their performances this season, points at great things ahead for the club if they manage to retain these players.
In around a yearai??i??s time, Thangboi Singto has been able to turn Lajongai??i??s fortunes around in the I-League. Singto, who has been at the club for quite some time now, took over when the club was fighting for league survival last season. At a time when the team was low on morale, the head coach took a step at a time and gradually got his side to move up a few gears. Over the course of the current season, Singto has been able to add a youthful exuberance to the side that was missing a season back. During the summer, the club brought in Subash Singh, Milan Singh and Robin Gurung among others, three young players who have helped Singto adopt an exuberant approach that was seen in the first few months of Stanley Rosarioai??i??s tenure at the club, albeit much more maturity has been seen in Singtoai??i??s side this time around. While Subash Singh hasnai??i??t really been able to cement his place in the team, the other signings, including Brazilian Uilliams, have definitely added a new dimension to the side. Lajong have played much more confidently this season, and the defensive errors that plagued the team in the last couple of campaigns, have definitely been cut down significantly. Seikhohao Tuboi and Boithang Haokip, two players who have been at the club for over half a decade now, have had their careers revitalized under Singto. What has done the trick for Lajong and for Singto has been reverting to a more jaunty approach, bringing in more energy into the side through the youngsters, and at the same time, being much more compact defensively. While the Minchol Sons, the Taisuke Matsugaes, the Wailadmi Passahs and the Cornell Glens have been crucial for the side, it is Singtoai??i??s faith in the young players, and using them in the right manner, which have greatly helped the side.
What is even more exciting for Lajong fans is the number of players coming up from its youth side. The Lajong side competing in this seasonai??i??s U-19 I-League has given a fair hint of the quality of players coming up at the club. The Red colts qualified for the final stages from the North East zone with a perfect record from the six games they played, firmly establishing their title credentials. Some of the names in the squad are already touted to make it big in the game in future. Shaiborlang Kharpan, Redeem Tlang, Bipin, Rupert Nongrum, Zodingliana Ralte, Hardy Nongbri, Shanbor Jyrwa, Prabal Deka, Angousana, Nim Tamang, Sandeep Singh, Rakesh Pradahan, etc. are some of the budding players at the club. These boys are expected to form the core of the clubai??i??s teams in the not-so-distant future, and if the early signs are anything to go by, Lajong could very soon be challenging for the major titles with these talented kids. Most of these boys have been at the club for a considerable amount of time, honing their skills at the club academy, which has been in operation since 2007.
The Shillong Lajong academy has not only been crucial in bringing out some talented players to the forefront, but by helping develop players starting from the U-14 age-group, it has also laid the foundations for the future of the club. The academy is doing its bit by producing some top-draw youngsters, and with Singto at the helm, the club is slowly building a team that could well go on to dominate the league in the coming years. The club is certainly starting to reap the rewards of investing in young, budding footballers, and more importantly for the club, Singto looks like the right man to help accommodate the right players in the right system. The club is looking at the long-term, and with the number of players coming up the ranks in the age-group sides, Lajong fans have every reason to get excited.
