Serie A 2014/15 – Can AS Roma Dethrone Juventus? Sassuolo Could Cause A Few Upsets

The 2014-15 Serie A season is knocking on the doors and the circumstances leading to the start of the season makes it one of the most anticipated in the recent years. Can Juventus win a fourth successive Scudetto under their new manager? Can they cope up with Antonio Conteai??i??s sudden departure? How will Roma fare this season after agonizingly missing out on the title last year? Will the Milan giants rise up to the occasion this time around? Napoli and Lazio cannot be counted out as well while it remains to be seen who will be the surprise package this season.

For the first time in the last three years, none of the top players have left the peninsula although there are serious doubts over the futures of Arturo Vidal, Juan Cuadrado and Mehdi Benatia. But so far they are still a part of their respective clubs with Ciro Immobile and Shkodran Mustafi being the only two promising names departing the league. No big name signing arrived this summer so far with Diego Lopez,Patrice Evra, Ashley Cole and Nemajna Vidic all being the traditional above 30 yr old free signings while Alvaro Morata and Juan Iturbe are two really promising names joining Juventus and Roma respectively.

Title race and Champions League spots

Roma are the favorites this term to win their first Scudetto since 2001. They had a wonderful campaign last year under new manager Rudi Garcia and would have been crowned champions had it not been for an astonishing Juventus side. They have retained (so far) their core this season and have added upgrades in their ranks with Walter Sabatini clearly emerging as the winner in the mercato so far.

Roma will be looking to knock off Juventus from the top of the table

Experienced heads like Ashley Cole and Seydou Keita will be important figures as Roma return to the Champions League after four years. Juan Iturbe was a protagonist last season with Hellas Verona and his signing is a major sign of intent from the management of Roma. Reports suggest Roma will make a big sacrifice before the window closes with the likes of Mehdi Benatia, Adem Ljajic and Mattia Destro all facing uncertain futures at the club. But except Benatia, the rest two were bit-part players last season and Roma should cope well even without their services. They have a stable project unlike their nearest challengers and Roma look like serious favorites to end their long awaited Scudetto drought.

Juventus are facing a summer of turmoil as the pre-season started in the worst possible fashion with head coach, mentor and leader Antonio Conte resigning from his post. Massimiliano Allegri was brought in as replacement and although the team spirit looks intact yet the summer of despair can turn to disaster if they lose Arturo Vidal within the next couple of days. The transfer activities were underwhelming to say the least and none of the eight new players are an upgrade on the starting 11. Alvaro Morataai??i??s signing is one which holds promise but his unfortunate injury meant he missed the entire pre-season sessions which is not good for a new signing. Romulo, Patrice Evra and Roberto Pereyra are not the names Juventus fans were hoping before the start of the new season although French youngster Kingsley Coman looks like a really talented professional.

Napoli have not shown enough ambition in the transfer market to consider them as challengers for the title. They have so far bought Miguel Michu from Swansea and Kalidou Koulibaly who looks a decent center-back. But Rafa Benitez knows that there is a significant lack of quality in the backline to challenge for the title and do well in Europe. They were in the market for a quality central midfielder but had to settle for second choice options as they missed out on their primary targets. Napoli have lost their goalkeeper Pepe Reina and experienced midfielder Valron Behrami. Blerim Dzemaili and Eduardo Vargas look set to leave as well. The Coppa Italia winners donai??i??t look likely contenders for the Scudetto and they must perform well to fend off a resurgent Lazio challenge this year.

Predictions

Europa league spots

Lazio were the undisputed winners of this mercato. Under pressure from the ultras after seeing arch-rivals Roma do so well last year, Igli Tare has done his part in rebuilding a squad that lacked quality. The bulk of the money spent on the new recruits was from the 20 million euro received in the transfer of Hernanes to Inter Milan.

De Vrij will be an important player for Lazio as they look to pose a strong challenge

Lazio added the versatile right fullback Dusan Basta from Udinese while Marco Parolo joined after a highly successful campaign with Parma. Nantes striker Filip Djordjevic joined on a free transfer and he might turn out to be a very good buy for newly appointed manager Stefano Pioli. The signing which made people look up and take notice was that of Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord who joined on the back of an impressive World Cup with the Netherlands. Competition for his signature was fierce and Lazio pulled off a coup after being humiliated in the transfer market by arch-rivals Roma in signing Davide Astori from Cagliari. All the signings represent a significant upgrade on the respective positions in the team and Lazio fans can hope for a better season this year.

Milan endured a painful season last year marred by controversies both on and off the pitch. January saw the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri while new manager Clarence Seedorf was also shown the door as performances on the pitch did not show any significant improvements. A new chapter will begin this year with club legend Fillipo Inzaghi making his managerial debut. A plethora of free signings have been finalized by Adriano Galliani who has done well to strengthen the squad with a minimal budget. El Shaarawy returns as a new signing almost and will surely flourish in the 4-3-3 module. Jeremy Menez might be good on his day but is too inconsistent to be considered a quality player. Adil Rami and Alex ,on paper, looks like a solid pair while Pablo Armero joins from Udinese after a promising World Cup. The biggest name however was Diego Lopez, arguably the best Spanish keeper in the last two years, who joins after being ridiculously shown the door at Real Madrid. Lopez represents a guarantee and he will look to exert his influence on the backline as well. Mario Balotelli is staying (99.99 maybe 99.98 percent) and this is definitely his last chance (again) to prove himself. The situation is still not bright but a new manager brings a new enthusiasm and Milan will hope that Inzaghi starts a renaissance of some sort this year.

Inter Milan begin a new era this season after waving goodbye to their Argentine contingent. Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso, Walter Samuel and Diego ai???El-Principeai??i?? Millito all left the club after glorious years with the Nerazzurri. Inter have replaced well with the free signing of Nemanja Vidic from Manchester United who has slotted in the middle of the defence alongside new captain Andrea Ranocchia.

Ausilio added many new faces in the Inter squad this summer

Brazilian left-back Dodo joined on a two year loan from Roma while the center of midfield saw the signings of Yann Mai??i??Villa and Gary Medel while Rene Khrin rejoined from Bologna. They will no doubt add much needed steel in the middle of the park allowing Hernanes and Matteo Kovacic to dictate play. Upfront Millito was replaced by Pablo Osvaldo who joined from Southampton in a loan swap involving Saphir Taider. Mauro Icardi will be leading the line this season and with Kovacic orchestrating the play this looks like a positive season ahead for Walter Mazzarriai??i??s team. Freddy Guarin and Hugo Campagnaro are expected to leave but Inter have added depth and quality and will present themselves as a big challenge to the top three.

Fiorentina will be hoping that their strike pair of Pepito Rossi and Mario Gomez stay fit for the season and deliver the goods after an injury ravaged season last year. Doubts surrounding the future of Juan Cuadrado and Stefan Savic will definitely unsettle the squad but they have already moved in to acquire German winger Marko Marin, Argentine defender Jose Maria Basanta while they remain on the market for a quality central midfielder. Serious question marks remain regarding the goalkeeper however and a shaky defence does not make them top six contenders at this moment. A lot will depend on the fitness of the front two and the future of Juan Cuadrado.

Predictions

How the mid-table might take shape this season

Parma under Roberto Donadoni were a revelation last season as they mathematically qualified for the Europa League only to miss out due to some technical failures. Probably the club president Tommaso Ghirardi has not yet recovered from this disappointment and Parmaai??i??s low keen transfer activities suggest the fact that they are not pushing for anything significant this season. Jonathon Biabiany is looking for a move if the reports are to be believed which will deteriorate the team even more. Parma will do well do get a top half finish this season.

Torino, the club that took Parma’s place in Europe, face a tricky season this time around as they have to balance the commitments in Europe along with the league campaign. Ciro Immobile moved to Germany but he was replaced by Fabio Quagliarela who returned to his youth team. Other players including Antonio Nocerino also joined the Granata. The future regarding Alessio Cerci is far from settled and his loss might be a tough blow for Giampiero Ventura to recover from. Torinoai??i??s season will probably hinge on how far they progress in the Europa League as they simply donai??i??t have the roster to balance league and cup fixtures simultaneously.

As is the case with Genoa always, this transfer window saw a host of players leaving and new players joining the club. This time though they have added flair to their roster. Gian Piero Gasperini always favors a 3-4-3 system and he will be pleased to have Iago Falque and Diego Perotti on two flanks with Mauricio Pinilla or Alessandro Matri in the middle. Thomas Rincon joined from Hamburg while Stefano Sturaro will remain on loan despite agreeing to a five year contract with Juventus. Genoa look good for a top 10 finish this season.

City rivals Sampdoria lost their promising German defender Shokdran Mustafi to Valencia which is a considerable loss for Sinisa Mihajlovicai??i??s squad but they have strengthened well by resolving the co-ownership deals of Fabbrizio Cacciatore, Vasco Regini, and Bartosz Salamon. In midfield they have signed Alfred Duncan on loan from Inter Milan while Emiliano Viviano joined as well. Manolo Gabbiadini is expected to feature centrally this season plus the added bonus of having a proven goalscorer like Gonzalo Bergessio is a good sign for Sampdoria. They look good for a top half finish this season.

Udinese will begin a new journey under their new manager after their long serving head coach Francesco Guidolin left the post after 4 years. They have quietly assembled a strong roster for this season.

New start for Stramacionni and Stankovic

Panagiotis Kone represents a very good move while they fended off competition to snap up Cyril Thereau from Chievo. Colombian midfielder Alexis Zapata also joined from Granada while they can always rely upon the goalscoring abilities of Toto Di Natale. Udinese should comfortably avoid the drop but donai??i??t look likely for a top 10 finish.

Hellas Verona were one of the most exciting teams last season and were very close to securing a place in Europe but ultimately finished in 10th position. They have lost their main protagonists as Romulo,Juan Itube and Jorginho all have left the club. Experienced Mexican captain Rafael Marquez joined Andrea Mandorliniai??i??s side while pair of Greece players, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Panagiotis Tachtsidis, was signed as well. It will be difficult for them to reproduce the form they showed last season but they should not worry about the drop too much at this moment.

New boys and the fight to avoid the drop

Palermo are back in the top-flight after a yearai??i??s absence. They dominated Serie B last season and were deserving champions. They approach the summer having a good squad with Kyle Lafferty being the only notable departure from Beppe Iachiniai??i??s squad. Experienced midfielder Luca Rigoni joined from Chievo while the signing of Bulgarian playmaker Ivaylo Chochev from CSKA Sofia represents a clever buy.

Dybala and Belotti

They possess exciting frontmen namely Paulo Dybala, Andrea Belotti and Abel Hernandez (who is rumored to be leaving the club though) who found the net on a consistent basis last season. Their main aim would be to secure survival but a few changes in the squad can see them have a good season like Hellas Verona last year provided maverick president Maurizio Zamparini does not start sacking managers for fun.

Cesena were severely paralysed because of the debts of the previous ownership but managed to reach the top-flight after a playoff win. The squad lacks quality and depth with Michele Camporese and Guido Marilungo being the only two recognizable names. They have signed Nicola Leali and Horour Magnusson from Juventus on loan but it looks an uphill struggle for them to survive the drop this season. Empoli relied on their veteran pair of Massimo Maccarone and Francesco Tavano to earn top flight football after an absence of 6 long years. The Tuscan club have signed a few interesting players on loan like Diego Laxalt from Inter Milan,Matias Vecino and Simone Verdi while the center-back pair of Daniele Rugani and Matteo Bianchetti looks promising on paper. Empoli know the magnitude of the task ahead of them to secure survival in top flight and will have to play extremely well to avoid relegation.

Chievo barely survived relegation last season but face a very tough campaign ahead of them having already lost their talisman Cyril Thereau and midfield linchpin Luca Rigoni. They have added Francesco Bardi to solve their goalkeeping problems while the trident of new of signings Walter Birsa, Maxi Lopez and Alberto Paloschi will have to deliver to ensure survival for the Flying Donkeys. Looking at the quality of the roster it looks unlikely that Chievo will survive the drop this year.

A new era for Cagliari will begin this season under new president Tommaso Guilini who took over from Massimo Celino. His first task was the appointment of head coach Zdenek Zeman and for the neutrals that is very welcome news. The loss of Davide Astori and Marco Pinilla were inevitable and Cagliari have replaced them with Marco Capuano who Zeman coached during his time at Pescara, while talented youngsters Lorenzo Crisetig and Samuele Longo arrived from Inter Milan. Expect a bottom-half finish for the Sardinian club although with Zeman in charge a few surprises are expected.

Atalanta face a long season ahead of them after a transfer window which has seen little to no movement in the areas that needed strengthening. Experienced captain Mario Yepes left the club but was replaced by Guiseppe Biava and Yohann Benalouane, neither of whom are likely to add any quality to the backline. Richmond Boakye and Rolando Bianchi joined on loan but the problem will most likely be the departures as Atalanta director recently claimed he is expecting 2-3 main players to leave. The likely candidates are Maxi Moralez, Giacomo Bonaventura and Luca Cigarini. Their poor away form last season will be a cause for concern and Stefano Colantuono knows that his side must perform beyond expectations to avoid the drop this season.

Predictions

Surprise package

Sassuolo have a really strong looking project backed by their powerful owner Giorgio Squinzi. Sassuolo are one of only three clubs in the top flight to have their own stadium. They have already spent 22 million euros on the market without counting the redemption costs of Matteo Brighi, Davide Biondini and Raman Chibsah which is literally unthinkable for other bottom-half clubs.

Trident of Berardi-Sansone-Zaza looks exciting

They are operating like a big club and are not hesitating to add quality to their ranks. Led by a young and enthusiastic trainer Eusebio Di Francesco, Sassuolo boast one of the most exciting tridents in top flight with Domenico Berardi and Nicola Sansone flanking Simone Zaza. They signed Sime Vrsaljko from Genoa and he will have Fredrico Peluso on the opposite side of defence. Jasmin Kurtic has returned from a fruitful spell with Torino while Sassuoloai??i??s sporting director has confirmed that they are on the market for a regista (Luca Cigarini and Francesco Lodi have been linked with a move). Sassuolo are operating very well on the market and they can cause a few problems to the big clubs this season.

Managers to watch out for

Fillipo Inzaghi will be starting his new journey as the manager of his beloved AC Milan this season. Milan endured a horrific season last year but they will be hoping for a better campaign under their legend who won everything he could as a player with the Rossoneri. Inzaghi brings with him an air of optimism which is much needed during a period of turmoil for the club. His first job will be to bring back the identity of this great club. No specific targets have been set by the management but a top three finish is definitely a feasible target.

Zdenek Zeman – The face of ai???football pornai??i?? is back in Calcio. Neutrals will be relishing the prospect of his relentless attacking module while the ai???beautiful loserai??i?? will definitely create a few controversies along the course of the season.

Zdenek Zeman

One thing is guaranteed; things wonai??i??t be dull when this man is in charge of a football club.

Andrea Stramaccioni will get his second chance as a manager in top-flight after a disappointing tenure with Inter Milan. Although he should not be squarely blamed for Interai??i??s failure that season, Stramaccioni perhaps was a bit naA?ve tactically in some games. But he will take up a much easier job compared to the one at Inter and the expectations of Udinese will allow him to settle on the job better. Stramacionni will be eager to prove himself as a top-level coach and he might not get a better opportunity than this one.

New signing to watch out for

Diego Lopez was harshly shown the door by Real Madrid but their loss is Milanai??i??s gain. He was arguably the best Spanish keeper in the last two years. Technically he is complete; he has great positioning and commands his D exceptionally well. He is confident with his feet and he is excellent at coming off his line.

Lopez will have an important role this year in Milan

At 6ai??i??4 he is quick and has praiseworthy reflexes. Milan are trying to rebuild after a disappointing season last year and have added a high quality goalkeeper who will not only save them points but will also organize the defence better. This will surely go down as another of Adriano Gallianiai??i??s masterstroke in the mercato.

Young starlet to watch out for

One of the brightest young talents in Turkey was snapped up by Roma this season as Salih Ucan joined from Fenerbahce on a two year loan. A fan of Frank Lampard, Ucan shows maturity on the pitch beyond his tender age. He can play as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers while he is equally comfortable as a central midfielder.

He is by no means a finished product and his positioning on the pitch is sometimes questionable but he will surely learn these aspects as he gets to train with one of the best midfields in Europe. He might not be a regular starter in league games but he is expected to start the Coppa Italia games. Rudi Garcia will try to mould him as vice-Pjanic and it remains to be seen how Ucan makes the step up to the first team.
