Sir Bobby Charlton, greatest ever goal scorer of England, has backed new captain Wayne Rooney to break his long standing record.
Wayne Rooney, newly appointed captain of England, is closing in on Sir Charltonai??i??s record of 49 international goals. Rooney scored his 41st international goal against Norway last week. The Manchester United striker is now Englandai??i??s fourth most successful striker with only Jimmy Greaves (44), Gary Linekar (48) and Sir Charlton ahead of him.
Rooney, with 217 goals so far, is also on verge of overtaking Sir Charltonai??i??s 249 goal tally for Manchester United. When asked about Rooneyai??i??s chances of breaking his record, Sir Charlton said that: “He is really keen to break my record, which seems to have stood for a long time. Sir Bobby Charlton won the World Cup for England in 1966 and the fans have similar expectations from Rooney. But the striker has failed to shine for England so far and he is being criticized by the English fans. But Sir Bobby Charlton asked the fans to remain patient.
He said: “What we have to do now is make sure that he wins. We need to start winning. It is all very well having these accolades that people push to you, but you have to make sure you get something out of it.”
Sir Charlton is a part of charity called Find A Better Way which aims to rid the world of effects of landmines by harnessing cutting-edge technology.
He took the opportunity to explain more about the work he is doing through this charity. Sir Charlton said: “There are lots of places I have been to and we have to make sure it is safe.
“There are places where if it is raining people go under the trees, but there are other people that will lay a bomb there simply because people will go under the trees. That can’t be right.
“It’s been fantastic. I’m happy I got it all started but it never stops. We have to keep going.”
