FC Schalke have sacked Jens Keller from his position as the head coach following a poor start to their Bundesliga campaign.
The Gelsenkirchen club currently sit in 11th position in the league table after an indifferent start to the new season which includes creditable draws against champions Bayern Munich and Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge. They also recorded an impressive win against Borussia Dortmund in the Ruhr Derby but suffered an embarrassing defeat against Dynamo Dresden in the DFB Pokal.
The defeat against Hoffenheim last Saturday proved to be the final game in charge for Keller who took the role of the manager two years ago. There had been speculations regarding his position after the loss against Hoffenheim on the weekend and now those stories have been confirmed as the Schalke board have officially sacked the German after extending his contract last year in May.
Schalke have recorded just two wins out of ten matches this season and have only seven points. He will be replaced by Roberto Di Matteo as confirmed by the club just moments ago.
Di Matteo who played for Italy in the 1990ai??i??s guided Chelsea to a FA Cup and Champions League in 2012. The former Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion manager will be finally managing a top-flight club after an absence of almost two years.
This will be the fourth club he will be managing after stints with MK Dons, West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea. In his only season at Milton Keynes Dons he finished third in League One narrowly missing out on promotion.
He was appointed the manager of West Bromwich Albion in 2009 after their relegation from the Premier League. Di Matteo secured automatic promotion to the Premier League after finishing second behind Newcastle United that season. He was sacked in 2011 following a string of poor results.
After an unsuccessful application to become the manager of Birmingham City, Roberto Di Matteo was appointed assistant to Andre Villas Boas, the new manager of Chelsea. He took over as caretaker manager following the dismissal of the Portuguese boss in 2012. He led them to an improbable triumph in Europe by winning the Champions League. A dramatic penalty shootout win over Bayern Munich handed Chelsea their first ever Champions League title and they also became the first club in London to win the coveted trophy.
He was appointed the permanent Chelsea manager next season after signing a two year contract. Despite a solid start to the season, Di Matteo was controversially sacked in November following their 3-0 loss against Juventus in the Champions League. He is still highly respected by the Chelsea fans and is a living legend in their eyes after serving the club to the best of his abilities.
Di Matteo will begin his new journey in Bundesliga against Hertha Berlin after the international break. He will face his former club Chelsea on 26th November in the Champions League.
