Real Madrid have slapped a 19m price tag on their young defender Raphael Varane, according to The Express. The reports suggest that former AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti is eager to sell Varane, as early as the January Transfer Window, given that the Frenchman has only had limited starts to his season.
The Premier League pair of Chelsea and Manchester United, who displayed interest in the Frenchman over the Summer transfer window are set to re-energise themselves, and bid for the Varane again.
The pair are more than likely to renew their interest and Real Madrid are reportedly open to offers in the region of 19m. Although Chelsea are in the pole position to sign Varane, as he has already featured for Jose Mourinho, Manchester United might bite the bullet and splash a heavy sum for his services.
Manchester United are already reeling with defensive crisis and Raphael Varane could be the answer to their worries. Sitting at seventh with just sixteen points, the Red Devils are facing uncharted territories. The Center back pairing of Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo have not showcased signs of sheer chemistry and with the latter out for three months, United could jump into the market to reinforce their Defense and mount an attack on the coveted Champions Leagues spots.
Although Chelsea are not in a defensive crisis like United, the Blues would be looking to secure their future defensive partnership. Gary Cahill is already a warrior in the heart of Chelsea defense and with John Terry likely to leave the bridge this summer, Chelsea could buy Varane as a possible replacement for Terry. The Blues however have Kurt Zouma, but Zouma has not featured for Chelsea regularly and lacks the experience that Varane has.
Meanwhile, Raphael Varane himself is suffering torrid times at Real Madrid as gaffer Carlo Ancelotti has preferred the pairing of Pepe and Sergio Ramos at the heart of Madrid defense.
With appearances limited, Raphael Varane would be eager to leave the Champions League winner and try his luck someplace else. Chelsea looks to be the Frenchman’s likely destination as he has already played under Jose Mourinho and was evolved as a better player under him.
Raphael Varane has been compared to Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro, largely due to his playing style and his game reading abilities, although the Frenchman tips Fernando in speed and strength.
Although Chelsea might seem as Varane’s possible destination, Manchester United could jump into the boat and hijack this deal as they are already reeling with defensive crisis and Varane could be a quick and permanent fix to their worries.
A battle of bids is the most likely scenario, with the eventual winner being the seller club, Real Madrid themselves.
