Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich received a fresh setback when it was revealed that captain Philipp Lahm would be ruled out for three months with a broken ankle.
The defender suffered the injury in a training session and is expected to miss all games until at least February, with a recovery date yet to be set.
Guardiola’s time at Bayern Munich has overseen plenty of injuries to key players. Lahm now joins the likes ofAi??Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Holger Badstuber on the treatment table.
Lahm retired from international duty after winning the World Cup in Brazil, citing allowing younger players a chance in the national team. The Bayern Munich captain has been a constant in the team under Guardiola, playing in a number of positions ranging from central defense to central midfield.
Injuries to Javi Martinez and Holger Badstuber resulted in Guardiola purchasing Mehdi Benatia from Roma in the summer transfer window, so it is likely that the Bayern Munich manager will once again take a dip in the transfer market to fill up the vacant slots in the backline.
Rivals Borussia Dortmund tweeted a “get well soon” message to Philipp Lahm upon hearing the news of the injury to the Bayern Munich captain.
Thomas Muller in race to be fit for Hoffenheim clash
There is some good news on the injury front for Pep Guardiola as Thomas Muller appears to be winning the race to be match fit ahead of the match against Hoffenheim.
Muller was withdrawn from the Germany squad ahead of their friendly against Spain, and it is reported that the attacker is back in training and close to match fitness.
Guardiola will certainly relish the return of Muller, who has been in great form this season. With Xherdan Shaqiri appearing to be on his way out, and an injury list that threatens to derail Munich’s season already, the return of Muller to the first-team would restore the balance in the squad.
Guardiola will also be able to welcome back key first-teamers from the the international break, although it remains to be seen how many of them will still be fresh to play on the weekend in a match that is expected to be a tight clash.
Bayern Munich are currently leading the pack in the Bundesliga, having notched up 8 wins and 3 draws in their 11 games so far. They are the only unbeaten side in the league at the moment, and face a key clash with 5-th placed Hoffenheim on Saturday.
