Manchester City’s gaffer Manuel Pellegrini, believes that his sides chances and hopes of success do not depend on prolific goal scorer Sergio Aguero. Aguero scored a hatrick against Bayern Munich, in City’s midweek Champions League encounter and opened a portal of chance and hope for the citizens to qualify for the next round. Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City take on a high flying Southampton side on Saturday.
“I think he is a top player(Sergio Aguero), a very important striker here in the Premier League and we are very glad to have him in our team.
“I think than no-one can replace (Lionel) Messi at Barcelona, (Cristiano) Ronaldo at Real Madrid or Sergio here. It is not the same to play with Aguero or without Aguero.
“But I always say we have a squad and if, for different reasons, Sergio cannot play, we must have another one that can do it.
“If your remember, we won the title here last year with a lot of games without Sergio. But when he plays, it makes a difference.
“But this team, we never depend just on one striker. This team last year, not all the players but an important amount of them, scored goals.
“Midfielders, strikers, we will try to continue the same way.
“In the last league game, Sergio didn’t score and we won with a goal from (Stevan) Jovetic and one from Yaya Toure. So we have a squad and that squad must be able to try and win.”
Although Manchester City defeated Bayern Munich, there performance was not impressing as 10men Bayern scored two goals against the ailing City defense. Southampton would be looking to capitalize on the same mistakes made by Manchester City.
“Southampton is a very good team with good players and they are playing very well.
“If you review last season, I think Southampton was very near this position in this week. They have very good players and they play well.
“We need it (a winning run). Mathematically it is not always exact in football, but you know you need a number of points every round if you want to win the title.
“The only thing we can do is to try and win at Southampton on Sunday and then we will see what we can do against Sunderland on Wednesday
“It is an important game because we need the three points and we can be in second place. It is always better to be second than third, but it is not only this game.
“This is the first game of the three we must play this week in the Premier League and I hope after the three we can be second place and be nearer to Chelsea.”
Although Manchester City would be favorites to win this fixture, Southampton can very well rue City’s resurgent form and grab all three points by force.
