Why would Paris-Saint Germain have the worst month in football? And who else qualifies for the ignominy?
When it’s May, inch closer to the TV and turn up the volume. With the leagues coming to the business end of their respective seasons, and engaging in some much-needed transfer speculation, there’s always much to follow.
Diego Simeone may have finally lost his cool, and turned on the referee, but with a La Liga title under his belt, it’s still been a pretty good month for him and his team.
The lucky sides have a trophy to hold on to, or at least a famous name linked to them transfer-wise. The not-so-lucky ones have painful losses to contend with, stars who want to leave, or just a ton of bad press to deal with.
Hull City
It must surely hurt the underdogs to have taken a quick-fire 2-0 lead, and proceed to surrender it to Arsenal of all teams. It’s usually the Gunners who find themselves at the receiving end of an opposition that recovers to place the final nail in their coffins, come injury time.
So it takes some incredibly bad luck, for Hull, to find its roles reversed in the FA Cup final of all games. For a team that looked like it was going to beat the odds and run away with an unlikely triumph, the dose of reality certainly would have hurt.
Liverpool
After the dust has settled on what should be seen as a successful season for a team that spent the last few seasons languishing in mid-table, you can’t help but feel sorry for the Reds. Their 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace, following their earlier defeat to Chelsea, rocked their title charge and left them trophy-less yet again.
There’s much for them to take pride in, but when Arsenal end the season with a trophy and a far superior Liverpool side don’t, you know there’s going to be some open wounds that need tending.
Yaya Toure
How do you go from being a title-winning champion to universally ridiculed in a matter of minutes? Ask Yaya!
As Toure’s agent publicly announced his client’s desire to move away from Manchester City, he also let slip the reason. Manchester City hadn’t wished their star, his client, a happy birthday. Nor had they gifted him the same Bugatti the legendary Roberto Carlos had received.
Toure then seemed to walk back the seriousness of the rift, before roaring back in defense of his agent. Do the words “Spoiled Brat” describe a 32-year-old guy too?
Barcelona
Nobody gave Barcelona a chance in this season’s La Liga. It was an especially painful season too, with Tito Vilanova losing his brave battle with cancer.
And yet come season-end, with the final game of the season being held at the Camp Nou, Barcelona was still in with more than chance. All they needed to do was win the game, and they’d be crowned league champions again. Of course it didn’t just pan out that way, and Atletico roared back after going a goal down.
The audience applauded the young champion side, but after having come so close to the title unexpectedly, they’ll be kicking themselves for not winning it for Tito.
David Moyes
We needed a manager on here. It takes some courage to not put Mourinho (for ending the season without any silverware) on this list. It might be also be questionable to punish Moyes with a mention while excluding Manchester United. The Red Devils don’t get the nod for this list because they had a terrible year, and May was actually quite a good month for them in the sense it brought an end to their misery.
So what does David Moyes feature on the list for? He got involved in a bar brawl with a loutish young builder at the classy Emporium wine bar in Clitheroe. There’s a lot of sympathy for Moyes for his sacking in April, but he could certainly have done without all this extra attention.
Paris Saint-Germain
As for ending May, on a terrible note, Paris Saint-Germain takes the cake. Winners of the Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain still manage to make the list for their ridiculous purchase of David Luiz for 50 million pounds, with the promise of additional payouts should they win the Champions League.
50 million for a defender who cannot defend. Perhaps they thought they were buying 2 players.
