When the 25 year old Serbian, Nemanja Matic, re-signed for Chelsea in January this year for a fee of 21 million pounds – estimated profit of 17 million pounds for Benfica – the ‘joke’ was on Chelsea. A player who was considered surplus to requirements two seasons ago at The Blues was now worth more than what everybody anticipated at the time. As has been the case with Chelsea in the past, they do not mind splashing cash when needed and if they believe the player is top class and can bring the club trophies, all the more worth it. Matic came to the club around the same time that Juan Mata left for United. While the decision to swap an attacking player for a defensive minded one was criticized then, Matic’s performances on the pitch have more than answered those critics.
Player profile
The tall Serbian international was initially signed for Chelsea in 2009 from Slovak club MFK Kosice for a sum of 1.5 million pounds. He was deputed to play in the Under-21s competition where he got injured, further delaying his Chelsea first team debut. After a difficult time in the two seasons he was at Chelsea – one year of which he was loaned out to Dutch side Vitesse – he predictably left the club to get a regular berth at Benfica. He went to the Portuguese club as a swap deal for David Luiz.
It was at Benfica that manager Jorge Jesus realised Matic’s potential as a holding midfielder rather than a play maker – a position he had been playing in at previous clubs including Chelsea. Having gone through a role change, Matic stayed on at Benfica for three seasons managing to win a trophy and reach the Europa League finals against his former club (and soon to be his next club) – Chelsea. It was his overall contribution and consistent performances that earned him the Portuguese Primera Liga Player of The Year for 2013. There was also the small matter of getting nominated for the FIFA Puskas Goal of The Year. Although he finished runner up there, it surely caught everyone’s attention and importantly Chelsea’s. It might have been then, that the process to get the Serb back to the Bridge was initiated.
As his performances in the big games have shown in his career so far, the decision has turned out to be a good one for him and the club. Like he has been throughout his career, he will hope that his performances continue to be consistent and of the highest quality.
Style of play
The tall, robust defensive midfielder is your typical box-to-box player. He is turning out to be one of the first names on the team sheet for Mourinho too. What sets him apart from other holding midfielders Chelsea have had in the past, is his exceptional passing ability from the back.
More often than not, he is the fifth defender for Chelsea as the opposition attacks. It is his reading of the game, his ability to intercept passes and go into tackles ,winning most of them. With him playing like he is at the moment, Mourinho gets the option of sending either Ramires or Lampard in a more attacking role, if required. As mentioned before, his distribution of the ball is also outstanding which might be an effect from his playmaking days before Benfica.
A look at the stats show how crucial he has been in stopping attackers this season. In his short 933 minute Chelsea career in the league, he has completed an impressive 504 passes with an accuracy of 83%. Also, most of his passes have been forward and less sideways. He has won 40% of his tackles and 50% of his aerial duels. Another impressive statistic is that of his defensive work this season so far. In his 933 minutes so far in a Chelsea shirt, he has put in 26 interceptions, 5 blocked shots and 49 clearances. This compared to Ramires who has 25 interceptions,6 blocked shots and 42 clearances in his 2472 minutes as a Chelsea player this season.
Perhaps his most impressive displays in his short career so far at The Bridge have been against Manchester City at The Etihad and his magnificent display against Tottenham. Whether it was ushering Yaya Toure away from goal or marking the dangerous Adebayor, Matic did it with elan. Overall, Matic has had a fantastic start to his second stint with the club. Like with all players, he is not perfect and will only get better as he ages and understands the game more. It is fair to say though, that Chelsea made a mistake of letting him go the first time. But as with football, mistakes are made and are corrected when one learns from them. All in all, almost all Chelsea fans would concur that Nemanja Matic is the best piece of business Chelsea have done this season.
