For some time now, Matija Nastasic has not had a great time at Manchester City. While he started well enough beside Vincent Kompany, the signings of Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala have put a dent on his growth as a player and has given him hardly any playing time to develop his skills as well as confidence.
With no hopes of getting into the first team, it seems Manchester City are willing to offload him for a very cheap price, which has piqued the interest of two clubs from North London, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
City are willing to sell Nastasic for 5 million and thatai??i??s the kind of deal that both clubs would be looking to snap up in January, considering how their defences have fared during this campaign.
Tottenham have not been the greatest demonstrators of solid defence, and have lost quite a few points. While their forwards have not been excellent either, a good defence can at least get you a point. And with Jan Vertonghen seemingly out of favour in the eyes of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, with reports surfacing that heai??i??s open to selling him in the winter transfer window, Nastasic would make a good backup for the team, and at a very low cost too.
But perhaps, the most pressing need for a defender lies with Arsenal FC, who, typically, did not make use of the summer to strengthen the one department in which they were falling short. With long term injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny, Arsene Wenger has resorted to using Nachho Monreal in centre back and exposing the very young Callum Chambers to more game time than he probably needs right now. It was evident in the game against Swansea City that he was struggling a bit, and needed help. Unfortunately, barring Hector Bellerin, Wenger had no one to replace him with.
With Nastasic, Arsenal would have a decent backup player who would be able to come on and do a job when required. Having not had too much playing time, Nastasic would also be happy with his place in the team, considering the number of injuries Arsenal tend to have. And if Arsene finally decides to buy another world class centre half, Nastasic would not be a hindrance as he can occupy the role of the 4th defender without any problems.
