Maybe it is in the passion that he shows for the cause, maybe it is his habit of winning matches against heavyweight opponents or maybe just that he is simply the best tactician around. Whatever the reason, there was only one name on everyone’s lips as Chelsea wrapped up the game deep into second half stoppage time. It was their beloved manager, their prodigal son, their all-conquering boss – Jose Mourinho.
Of course it is wrong to only credit the success to off-field tactics, Chelsea players were all over Liverpool like a rash. There was no breathing space provided to any attacker, no chance to turn and shoot. Any chance they had of breaking them down had to be done with special skills. With Suarez and Gerrard within your ranks, you do expect those special skills. The usually brilliant Uruguayan had a quiet game with only two or three moves worthy of a mention. Gerrard had a decent game, but that one slip allowing Demba Ba to break free and score a goal at the Kop end will probably hurt him more than anything has ever done.
There was no doubt about it, Chelsea were set up to defend. With Lampard, Matic and Mikel in the middle of midfield, there was little left to imagination as to how this game would pan out. The Blues started in their traditional 4-3-3 with Schurrle and Salah flanking the wings to support Demba Ba.Tomas Kalas was handed his first full debut. Liverpool, on the cusp of a historic title, went for it with an attacking line up. Gerrard would sit in front of the back four and provide passes to Sterling and Coutinho who would in turn find Suarez. Former Chelsea man Daniel Sturridge, however, had not recovered enough to start.
Mark Schwarzer, who started in goal for Chelsea, was called upon quite a few times during the game. While he did brilliantly to save a typical long range Gerrard shot in the first half, most of the other saves were pretty routine. Suarez’s attempted shot towards the end of the match was probably his most important save. The men in front of him too did brilliantly. Ivanovic, as usual, put in an honest, hard-working shift. The debutant Kalas was also effective. He had the difficult job of marking Luis Suarez and he did it with relative ease. Although it was only Ashley Cole’s first start in three months, the 33-year old proved that he still has it to stay at the top.
Matic and Mikel shepherded the Chelsea back four diligently. Andre Schurrle was a tireless runner throughout the match, helped break attacks and also start his own. The ever impressive Azpilicueta also put in a shift, keeping the likes of Sterling and Coutinho at bay most of the times. It was these individual pieces of brilliance that made Chelsea a literal blue wall which Liverpool could not break down.
The two Chelsea goals came in added time at the end of each half. The first of which resulted from an unfortunate slip by Steven Gerrard, resulting in Ba capitalising and running from the half way line on his own to put the ball past the diving Mignolet. The second was a result of Liverpool having to attack to get back a goal at the very end of the game. An interception from Willian, which he passed to Torres who was in yards of space with no defender in sight. Having started the move, Willian accompanied Torres on his run. The Spaniard remained calm under pressure, squared the ball to Willian to complete a 2-0 victory for Chelsea.
This win means that Chelsea have done the double over City and Liverpool this season while remaining unbeaten against all the other three big clubs – Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United.
The chants of “boring, boring Chelsea” reverberated around Anfield for most of the second half as Chelsea tried to hold on to the lead. Little did the fans realise, this only spurred Mourinho more. And it made the Chelsea fans at the other end happier. Some may call it ‘anti-football’, but for a points-hungry manager like Mourinho, this game epitomizes his knowledge and reading of the game. At the end of the day, football leagues are won with points and not with performances, one would say. It is this very feeling one gets with Mourinho in these big games. Watching him on the touchline is like poetry in motion for Chelsea fans. He is involved with everything – a wrong decision, an unnecessary tackle by his own player and sometimes even playing conductor to spur the crowd on. In what has become a trademark for him nowadays, his run down the touchline towards the Chelsea fans signifies all that is to know about the man. He loves this job, he is passionate about the club and he finally feels at home.
On the other hand, playing the game beautifully and collecting points has been Liverpool’s forte this season. Former Chelsea reserves manager Brendan Rodgers has molded the team into a machine – capable of overrunning anyone who stands in their path. Led by Steven Gerrard in the twilight of his career, Liverpool have been the team one would gladly pay money to watch. Their brilliant one-touch play, quick and sharp passing has been usually put to a meaningful end by SAS this season. From Liverpool’s view point, this game can be considered to be a blip in an otherwise stellar campaign.
All said and done, Liverpool will be shattered that they could seal the title at Anfield. It is now out of their hands as to who will win it, they just have to win their remaining two games and hope that City and Chelsea slip up along the way. In what has been yet another fascinating season, the Premier League title is still not decided. Any way it goes, history is sure to be created. Whether it is Mourinho’s first since his return or Liverpool’s first in 24 years or Pellegrini’s first League title in England – us fans are in for a treat in the coming few weeks!
