Chelsea FC maintain their lead at the top of the table as John Terry scores a late winner against Everton at Stamford Bridge.
With an early kick-off in this game Chelsea had the opportunity to put pressure on their title rivals with a win over Everton, a side which defeated them earlier this season. But it was the away side who started the match on the front foot. Everton looked the more sharper and brighter of the two sides, but they failed to make anything of their dominance in the first half and that turned out to be crucial in the end.
Chelsea hung on and fought back in the second half of the game and in the end grabbed all three points with a late goal from captain John Terry, who returned to the line-up in this game after recovering from his injury. The goal came from a Frank Lampard free kick, which Terry headed home in the dying moments of the game. Both these experienced players have combined once again to provide the Blues with a crucial win.
Jose4 Mourinho was delighted with the win in such a tough encounter and believed his players deserved a bit of luck in the end for their endeavour.
“It was a very difficult match. In periods one team was dominant and the other had to play well defensively to cope.
“It’s a good feeling to win in the end. The players did everything, they wanted to win.
“For 20 minutes we were in control, after that Everton were in control. They pass the ball well.
“For the last 15 minutes we were strong and dominated. When you score [late] you can talk about luck but the boys chased that.” ai??i?? The Chelsea manager said.
Mourinho also insisted that a draw wouldnai??i??t have been a good result for Chelsea, although Everton would have taken it gladly.
“A point for them is a good point. A point for us is not good, and in the end maybe we deserved it.” ai??i?? Mourinho added.
The Chelsea boss once again pointed out the competitiveness in the league and stressed on how crucial it is to keep winning or a team can drop down the table fairly quickly.
“If today we had a draw, I think in a couple of hours we would be third in the table. This is the reality in this competition.
“The feeling when you lose late points is bad. When you win it’s the opposite. It’s a compensation of the points against West Brom.” ai??i?? He explained.
Brazilian playmaker Oscar was taken off at halftime and Ramires replaced him. Mourinho confirmed that Oscar was carrying a knock and they didnai??i??t want to risk him any further.
“Oscar was injured. He said he could cope with the pain, there was no risk to make it worse, but he couldn’t.” ai??i?? He said after the game.
