Big games in a football calendar are rare to come by – their relevance in the modern football has only grown since the gap between the big sides and the rest of the pack has only been on the rise ever since the turn of the millennium. The excitement quotient therefore is left only among these few fixtures involving the supposedly big teams in the league. Apart from the prospects of witnessing the top players lock horns, a tradition and culture of rivalry between the clubs also plays a very important role in adding to the flavour of these matchups. Speaking of traditions, conventionally the power in Italian football has been fairly limited to the two giants in Milan and another one from Turin. However, the league dynamics seem to have been on a turn, if they haven’t already that is. No longer does either of the Milan clubs pose any serious threat on the elusive Scudetto and in fact, Juve have found closer challenge to their title from the less familiar quarters. But despite that,Ai??Chelston D’Souza (CD hereafter), the resident Juventus columnist at TheHardTackle believes a Milan-Juve fixture can never be deemed insignificant from the point of view of the either side. His counterpartAi??Parth Pandya (PP hereafter),Ai??a Serie A editor and AC Milan featured columnist, is of a slightly pessimistic opinion and affirms there’s no way Milan could be anywhere close to Juventus for the next three years to the very least. CD:Ai??What do you make of Milan’s season so far? What’s the realistic target right now? Is it a disaster if they fail to qualify for Europe which as the Milan fans say, “is in their DNA”?
PP:Ai??To be honest, the remainder of the season is rather inconsequential as far as any tangible objectives are concerned. Itai??i??s safe to say European football is out of sight which indeed will be a big blow but itai??i??s the right time to lay a strong foundation rather than stretching the limited resourced in the quest for unrealistic goals. The current season has been an abysmal one by all means and should we be able to write a better climax with an inspiring finish, Iai??i??d consider it a success. Yes, we do like to pride our clubai??i??s exploits at the Champions League and with good reason, mind you. But Iai??i??m afraid in order to make another claim at that glory, we might need to hit the rock bottom once, that is a season in isolation of European nights.
CD:Ai??Is Seedorf really the right man to lead this New Milan considering he has zero coaching experience? What are the chances he might turn out to be another Ciro Ferrara?
PP:Ai??Well, itai??i??s no secret Clarence has grabbed the job more due to his personal rapport with Berlusconi and not building a claim on the basis of very strong coaching credentials, he doesnai??i??t have any in fact. But that in itself begs a different side of argument. Berlusconi may not have done the best service to the club in the recent years but he surely isnai??i??t a nomad taking destructive steps and hence he does know a few things about Seedorf which none of us do. His start with Milan has been anything but spectacular but the team has at least produced the best phase in the season in terms of results. The rest too should change in due course of time. At this point, the least Seedorf deserves is patience and trust from fans.
CD:Ai??There was a lot of talk surrounding Honda’s arrival but he has played well below par. Is he already a flop and do you see him making a name for himself at Milan?
PP:Ai??Iai??i??d have personally preferred Hondaai??i??s transfer to have been completed in the summer itself. I have never been the greatest fan of winter acquisitions signed with the aim of turning a season upside down. At best, they may offer some quick remedy but thatai??i??s that. Honda is a long term idea and deserves more time to settle in a new environment, a new culture and a new system. In strictly footballing terms, he is a player who enjoys more creative freedom in an auxiliary central role which so far has been reserved for Kaka. On the wings, he often lacks the muscle to outrun the fullbacks and isnai??i??t the best crosser of the ball either. At this point, it will be hard to predict whether Seedorf has any plans to slot him into his preferred role or will he actually learn to flourish in a new role and produce the goods. In a way therefore, itai??i??s a good thing Milan arenai??i??t competing for any titles this time around. It helps these players settle down with ease without feeling the heat of a title race or sometimes even two.
CD:Ai??How do you see this new Galliani/Barbra Berlusconi “partnership” working out? Is Galliani being treated unfairly or does he deserve the sack with his awful recent track record?
PP:Ai??Galliani is the centrifugal force in everything even remotely associated with Milan. Right from the appointment of the coach to signing the players and winning the best sponsorship deals, he has a say and is involved to the core in all businesses. Milan perhaps needed a bit of decentralization because the Galliani model has been in contrast to the oldest management lesson that advises against putting all the eggs is one basket. Of course, Barbaraai??i??s sudden elevation in stature has got a lot to do with the prevalent nepotism but end should justify means, should she really succeed in what she intends to do. It wonai??i??t be fair to entirely blame Galliani for the current predicament though. There are a number of factors and people who need to shoulder the responsibility. Two of them (Braida and Allegri) have already been done away with. But of the entire manifesto presented by Barbara, if thereai??i??s one thing I donai??i??t have any disagreements with, itai??i??s the change of the Galliani culture that she has proposed. And that doesnai??i??t solely point to the removal of Galliani; it talks about taking a more modern and business minded approach at running the club where Galliani will play an important but a considerably diluted role.
CD:Ai??How many reinforcements do you think Milan need for next season? Surely the defence needs an overhaul. When do you think they will become serious title contenders?
PP:Ai??I think the attack looks decently poised as of now provided we manage to retain Balotelli in the summer. It is very hard to predict things at this point since we are unaware how much would the equations change without a shot at European football. Not only will that make it hard to retain the top players but it puts a question mark on the arrival of the desired players too. As of now, central defence and creative midfield need immediate attention but building a squad to mount a title challenge is not going to be easy. I reckon for another two or perhaps even three seasons, Milan are far from being contenders at any competition barring Coppa Italia.
CD:Ai??Well, looks like I’m done. Let’s see what you’ve got in store for me.
PP:Ai??Sure, let me begin. Ai??It will be fair to say Juventus are in a league of their own in the domestic backdrop. But that’s not been the case in Europe. Do you see the team go far in Europa League considering the league title looks secured already?
CD:Ai??I think the league title is far from secured. Sure, we’re well on our way to retaining it again but knowing Conte, he won’t rest until we are crowned Champions again. Thus, the Europa League takes a back-seat. While I do think it’s important that we do well in the Europa League, I don’t see it being given the highest priority. The final at the Juventus Stadium is an incentive not to be undermined and while there are many other benefits of doing well in the Europa League, it’s the Scudetto that will make Juventus the happiest. Having said that, seeing as how Fiorentina are next in line, the team would love to exact revenge on the only team to have beaten us in the league.
PP:Ai??What exactly do you reckon Conte needs to bring in his coaching repertoire to replicate the domestic success in Europe? Should things change on the third attempt next season?
CD:Ai??When Conte joined Juventus, he had the reputation of being a stubborn manager tactically. He wouldn’t shift out of his comfort zone that was the 4-2-4 but his first season displayed his eagerness to throw away the judgement placed on him. Conte was willing to adjust his formations and the flexibility was there to see but that has faded away since his commitment to the 3-5-2 emerged and that’s a system that simply won’t work when it comes to boxing with the big guys.
I think the squad needs more creative outlets in the final third. Wingers will definitely be on the transfer wish-list as the team lacks pacey players and they can possibly initiate a change in formation that will help the side do better in Europe’s premier competition. I do feel the need for Juventus to announce themselves on a continental level and that can be achieved with a semi-final or better level in the Champions League.
PP:Ai??Of course, the entire team deserves massive credit for nearly sealing the title already but it’s hard to undermine the individual impact of Carlos Tevez. However, Tevez has had this tendency of fading away after exploding in his debut season. Would that change at Juve?
CD:Ai??Tevez has been incredible and has slotted in so well here. I certainly hope that trend that he is infamous for discontinues at Juventus. It’s been smooth sailing since he’s got here and there have been no signs of unnecessary controversy which is always a positive sign. The motivation lies in the fact that this could very realistically be last real chance at European success. Seeing as how he’s 30, this could be his last stint at a top European club before he eventually returns to his native Argentina. I do believe these are tools of motivation that could keep away the disinterest.
PP:Ai??Which teams do you see as likely contenders for challenging Juve for domestic supremacy in near future? The Romas and the Napolis have flattered to deceive but have lacked in the squad depth to keep the challenge alive at the crucial junctures in the season. Do you think they might raise their best to the next level in the upcoming days or is there a likelier chance of resurgence at the part of the Milano clubs?
CD:Ai??Roma and Napoli look like two teams with a plan in place and prepared for the future and with coaches who can very well take them to the next level. Much of Roma’s good work goes unnoticed simply because they’re in second place. In any other league season, they probably would be at the summit but it’s only an outstanding Juventus that is keeping them at bay. I think they along with Napoli will really push Juventus to their limit next season. Fiorentina too, are not to be ignored in their relentless pursuit of excellence.
As for the Milan teams, the immediate future doesn’t look too bright but the problems have been acknowledged and the need for change has been addressed. Milan and Inter have taken steps in the right direction by letting go off Allegri and Branca respectively. While the damage will take time to repair, the tools are in place to get the process started. I feel that it will take a good season or two for them to realistically mount a Scudetto challenge.
PP:Ai??Talking of this game, neither side frankly has too much at stake here. Does it lessen the intensity? How do Juve fans look at the games against Milan these days? What’s your predicted outcome?
CD:Ai??I don’t think it lessens the intensity at all. We are talking about two of Italy’s most successful clubs who have enjoyed a rivalry for many many years. Regardless of where they maybe placed on the table, a game between Milan and Juventus is always a spectacle. There’s mutual respect between both sets of fans. I don’t think Juve fans look at Milan with the same venom that they do with Inter. You can’t help but admire Milan and all that they have achieved as well as some very likeable players in the past that have donned the famous Red and Black jersey.
Since Milan have improved under Seedorf, I think this game won’t be as straightforward as some people would have you believe. Factor in Juve’s midweek clash and the hours of travelling involved along with fatigue placed in for good measure and you have a few levelling elements. Juventus are definitely favourites though and I’d go for a slender win for the Bianconeri but won’t be surprised if Milan manage to hold Juve to a draw.
