Mehdi Benatia has been a rock at the back for AS Roma this season. A look back at some of his wonderful displays for the Giallorossi this term.
‘If Roma are spending all that money on Benatia, then something is not right’, fumed former AS Roma right back Christian Panucci as the club concluded business with Udinese regarding the purchase of Mehdi Benatia for an estimated cost of ai??i??13.5m and co-ownerships of Uruguayan teenager Nico Lopez and the promising Italian youngster Valerio Verre. Renowned Roman journalist Roberto Renga suggested that Roma were making a mistake by letting these talented kids leave for an ai???underachievingai??i?? Moroccan. After the departure of Marquinhos, there was a bit of scepticism about the new arrival from Udinese. Now, after 33 games, Benatia has persuaded even his harshest detractors. The Moroccan has in fact revolutionized the Giallorossi defense. The excellent tactical work of Rudi Garcia must also be complimented but the performances of Benatia has been just phenomenal – the defender has staged all his technical skills and athleticism, the confidence and maturity on the pitch that has enabled Roma to play with a high defensive line. Plus he has scored five goals. Benatia was unbeaten in 24 consecutive league games (7 with Udinese and 17 with Roma) which speaks volumes about the season experienced by him. Only one player in Serie A history has been on such a streak. That was Dejan Stankovic in 2006 as part of the Inter side that won 17 games in a row in 2006 – a Serie A record.
Not for the first time in his career, Mehdi Benatia faced the wrath of critics and questions were raised regarding his talent to make an impact at the top level. A talented graduate of the famous Clairefontaine School, Benatia joined the Marseille academy as a 16-year-old in 2003 and signed his first professional contract two years later. Generation ’87 was supposed to be the most talented crop of youngsters France has produced in recent times and they made a name for themselves by winning the 2004 European Under-17 Championship beating a Spain side that included Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas in the final.
Nasri, Benzema and Ben Arfa made their senior international debuts under Raymond Domenech in 2007, while Benatia was discarded by Marseille. The centre-back had a successful trial at Chelsea with Jose Mourinho, tested by Didier Drogba among others, but decided to stay at Marseille in order to improve his chances of playing regular football but eventually he was shipped off to Ligue 2 club Clermont . He had already lost any hope of playing for France and instead participated in a few friendlies for the Morocco U-21 team, though he couldn’t take part in official matches because he still didn’t have citizenship. Of North African origins, just like Nasri, Benzema and Ben Arfa, not to mention Zinedine Zidane, Benatia chose, contrary to them, to represent the country where his father was born.
Udineseai??i??s scouting network spotted Benatia at Clermont and picked him up on a free transfer in 2010. Finally given a chance at the highest level by Udinese, Benatia played 80 times for the Zebrette helping Udinese qualify for European competitions in every single year. In the summer of 2013, he joined Roma. Udinese won 52.6% of the games he started compared to 42.1% of those where he didn’t and conceded, on average, 1.05 goals per game with him in the side and 1.32 without him. He recorded an exceptional 3.5 tackles and 3.8 interceptions per game. Benatia was one of the league’s most active central defenders. His best skills were anticipation, marking, interception, tackling and aerial duels though he is not the quickest player. Comfortable with the ball, he can be considered a good option to build from the back. Benatia used his size and agility to invade and shrink his opponents attacking space. He won 74% of his headed duels which was very good. Udinese climbed from ninth position to fifth once Benatia recovered his fitness and form in his last season there. They won each of their final seven games, the last one being a 5-2 dismantling of Inter Milan at the San Siro. Benatia came a full circle that day. Three years earlier Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin had given the Morocco international his debut against the same opponent at the same ground. It was to be his last game for them as well.
A New Roman Chapter
In a summer which saw the capital club make vast changes to their squad the signing of Mehdi Benatia went almost unnoticed among the plethora of players moving in and out of the clubai??i??s Trigoria training ground. Yet ever since he arrived, the 26-year-old has helped to transform the fortunes of the Giallorossi defence. Last season Roma conceded 56 goals as the side stumbled from one shambolic display to another. Rudi Garcia retained the same 4-3-3 module but began the season by instantly pairing the Moroccan international with Brazilian Leandro Castan. The Giallorossi went on a remarkable opening run, winning their first 10 league games and conceded only a single goal during that impressive streak.
Benatia was integral to these solid displays, playing every minute of it and also weighing in with two goals. He has netted a further three times since but it has been his and Romaai??i??s ability to shut down opposition strikers which has been the most impressive aspect to their campaign. They have conceded just 19 times in the league this term, significantly less than any other side in the division. Only Juventus (9.8) allow opponents fewer shots per game than the Giallorossiai??i??s 10, while Fiorentina (11.8) and Napoli(12.7) Ai??are the only sides to commit fewer fouls per outing.
While he is generally listed as a centerback in Roma, Udinese utilized the three men backline for much of last season with Benatia featuring on the right side. Here Rudi Garcia uses him as a central defender alongside Castan and Benatia has adapted to his new role with relative ease.
He certainly has the confidence to the move up the pitch, not only pressing opponents, but being an active contributor in the passing game.Generally speaking, the greatest gift he gives to Garcia’s offense is his size, particularly when it comes to set pieces but his goal against Sampdoria proves that he is more than capable with his feet and can make darting runs from his own half to score a goal.
But it’s not all sunshine rainbows when it comes to Benatia’s defensive abilities. Benatia isn’t terribly adept at drawing opponents offside. He has committed too many fouls which have resulted in dangerous situations for his team. He likes short passes but it can be a double-edged sword as he cannot support his teammates with long crosses to support counter attacks. Benatia’s tendency to close down shots is pretty low and for a man of his size it is expected that the Moroccan should get in front of the shots a bit more often. His overall passing leaves a little to be desired and as mentioned he prefers short square passes mostly.
In the first ten games, the Giallorossi net was caused to ripple just the once ai??i?? in a 3-1 victory over Parma ai??i?? and they have carried that excellent early form deep into the season. With just nineteen goals conceded to date, Roma has the best defence in Europe along with Paris Saint-Germain (19) – the duo are the only two sides to concede fewer than twenty times in the continentai??i??s top five leagues.
Roma have achieved this feat by firstly denying their opponents the ball, then by pressing well to limit the number of chances De Sanctis faces. The 37-year-old has kept nineteen clean sheets, four more than any other stopper in the league, thanks largely to a defence which has allowed just 90 shots in the first thirty three matches of the season. The towering displays seen in central defence where the partnership of Benatia and Castan have largely ensured that Roma are a solid defensive outfit this season. They have instantly shown the kind of understanding which often takes countless hours to forge and one that has only grown as the campaign has developed.
Benatia is more than just a physical presence however, showing fine distribution skills to average 49.3 passes per game with a completion rate of 88.9%. Castan has contributed an average of 2.3 tackles and 2.2 interceptions ai??i?? while completing 88.1% of his 46.4 passes per game ai??i?? meaning their raw statistics are surprisingly similar with the Moroccanai??i??s tally of five goals perhaps making him the more important component of the pair. But to see them on the field is to watch two men who fully complement one another, their pace and intelligence often covering for any errors that occur ahead of them in midfield. It has also allowed Roma to maintain a high defensive line able to condense the field and stifle opponents in tight areas denying them the space in which to create chances. The pair has been very proactive often coming high out of defence to intercept the ball and building the play from there.In contrast to his recent predecessors, Garcia has made Roma compact out of possession. They organise themselves so well that it is really difficult for opponents to break them down.
Of the shots Roma have conceded this season, only 3.8% have been classed as clear cut chances. Thatai??i??s lower than anyone else, including Livorno (4.9%), Napoli (5.5%), Juventus (5.7%) and Inter (6.8%). Unable to play through Roma, teams are resorting to attempts from distance. At 69.6% the percentage of shots they have conceded from outside the penalty area is higher than any other side in Serie A. Goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis has had little to do. Forced into 1.86 saves per game, he is the least worked shot stopper in the league this season.
Of Romaai??i??s six new arrivals over the summer who has made the biggest difference? It is probably a toss-up between Mehdi Benatia and Kevin Strootman. Considering that the defence was the area of the team most in need of an upgrade and how much better it has become – it is the best in Europe with only nineteen goals conceded in 33 matches – the inclination, though, is to go with Benatia.
The peninsula has long been famous for producing superb central defenders, but 2013-14 has seen a non-Italian become the real standout performer in that role. AS Roma currently boast both Serie Aai??i??s best defence and, arguably, its most in-form defensive player. The playerai??i??s form has now unsurprisingly captured the attention of some of Europeai??i??s truly big clubs. Manchester United and Bayern Munich have been joined in their pursuit of him by Barcelona according to reports in Spain and his future is currently unclear.But, while it remains to be seen if Roma will choose to cash in on him, what is abundantly clear is that Mehdi Benatia has quickly become Serie Aai??i??s best defender. To put it simply, France missed out on the most professional, dedicated and consistent player of Generation ’87, largely because he was mistreated at Marseille. Benzema, Nasri, Menez and Ben Arfa are still waiting to make a significant contribution to Le Bleus. Benatia would definitely have been a very welcome addition to their squad at the upcoming World Cup.
