Manchester United have finally made their big signing of the season. We look at where Angel Di Maria fits into Louis Van Gaalai??i??s plans.
Even as the first Angel Di Maria number 7 shirt was being printed nonchalantly by a female operator, the question of where Manchester Unitedai??i??s record signing will fit in Louis van Gaalai??i??s system had already done the rounds. Before we begin to get into the details of it, we must admit that this is a top class signing, the kinds David Moyesai??i??s increasingly bulging grey eyes were looking out for. Fresh from having being handed the World Cup runners up and Champions League winnersai??i?? medals, Di Maria, finding himself unsettled, though still wanted at Madrid, opted to join the Louis van Gaal revolution at Old Trafford.
In spite of being the kind of signing that would make mouths water, Di Mariaai??i??s signing surely has not solved any of the major problems United faced in the first three official matches this season. There are also shades of Juan Mataai??i??s acquisition in this signing, in terms of getting a top quality player for a position not exactly lacking in the first place. With talents like Rooney, Van Persie, Mata and Januzaj already on the roster, Di Mariaai??i??s signing represents adding another blade to a shaving razor, when what really was needed was the handle to stick the blades on.
Nevertheless, having Di Mariaai??i??s quality in the squad is a definite plus and having paid 59.7 million pounds for the Argentine, Van Gaalai??i??s United should see him as a starter. This poses the question of where exactly Di Maria fits in. Letai??i??s start with his strengths. Di Maria is a good at two things ai??i?? creating chances and getting past defenders, both handy abilities to have had during the drab draw against Sunderland. Di Maria has pace and an excellent work-ethic, which makes him more versatile than it appears at first glance.
Though a winger by trade, the Argentine has also played, and to good credit, as the left sided member of a three man inside midfield, most recently for Argentina at the World Cup and Real Madrid last season. This versatility makes him a key member in Louis van Gaalai??i??s plan, especially given the Dutchmanai??i??s propensity to tactically changing things around during a match. Van Gaal seems to be stubbornly sticking with the 3-4-1-2 formation, reassuring that his methods would take at least three months to bear fruit. But, will Van Gaal change his formation to accommodate Di Maria, without dispensing with his other talents? We look at a few scenarios that Van Gaal could employ.
Scenario 1: Di Maria in a 3-4-1-2 formation
Danny Mills and Alan Curbishley kept bemoaning the fact that United played with Sunderland, not with three, but five at back for large periods of the game and that such positioning did not exploit the advantages of a 3-4-1-2 system. There is a reason for this predicament, and it comes from the combination of Unitedai??i??s lack of quality at centre back and central midfield, which draws the wing backs into defensive positions.
In such a scenario, playing Di Maria as a left wing back, in a position that curbs his attacking strengths, does not make too much sense. But, given Van Gaalai??i??s determination in making his methods work, we might see United take to the field in a 3-4-1-2 quite a lot during the first few months of the season. And in such a situation, the most likely position for Di Maria to play is at wing-back. And it might not be such a bad option.
Di Maria likes to get to the by-line and deliver telling crosses in from the wings. Last season, he got 2.1 accurate crosses per game, much more than Rooneyai??i??s 1.2 crosses, the most by a United player. So, attack wise United fans will be relishing the prospect of Di Maria charging down the left and hitting crosses across the opposition penalty area in that corridor of uncertainty. To nit-pick a little here, Di Maria would probably be more effective as a left wingback than on the right. Playing him on the right has two disadvantages ai??i?? he becomes all too predictable, cutting in from the right, as Di Maria prefers his left foot a lot more than the right. It would be like playing Ryan Giggs at right wing. The second disadvantage is that he will be unable to get the tackles in when tracking an opposing winger on Unitedai??i??s right hand side. Which brings us to the big concern in playing Di Maria at wing-back.
He might have a strong work-ethic and might be eager to chase opponents down, but Di Maria is not a wing-back in truth. His natural attack minded approach is bound to leave him stranded up the pitch when United get dispossessed, leaving huge spaces for the opposition to fill. For this formation to work, Unitedai??i??s central midfield players must be willing and able to scurry across the pitch and cover for Di Mariaai??i??s absence from his defensive position. This is where the likes of Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley just donai??i??t cut it. What United need is a tracker like Arturo Vidal or Kevin Strootman, someone in the Roy Keane mould, eager to cover ground and put in a tackle.
Another option for Van Gaal is to use Di Maria as an out and out forward in a 3-4-1-2, like the role Arjen Robben performed at the World Cup with Holland. Pairing Di Maria with Robin van Persie or Wayne Rooney, Van Gaal would be able to replicate the effective front pairing he used in Brazil. Di Maria has the pace and dribbling ability that makes him the perfect player for the ai???Arjen Robben roleai??i?? in this formation. This would mean sacrificing one of Rooney, Van Persie or Mata to accommodate Di Maria.
Rooney might even be asked to play on the left. However, it seems unlikely the club captain would be moved around to a position he does not want to play in. Playing Rooney in the number 10 role would mean Mataai??i??s spot in the starting eleven will be under threat. Van Gaal might even use these four players in rotation, with one of them having to make way for the others every other week.
Scenario 2: Di Maria in a 4-3-3 formation
Playing a 4-3-3 would mean Van Gaal would need to push back on his attempts at instilling a completely new philosophy at Old Trafford, for the 4-3-3 is a formation steeped in Unitedai??i??s illustrious history. The 4-3-3 would provide more security to a suspect defence, and is a formation Di Maria has performed admirably in, in the past. This however, would again mean sacrificing one of Rooney, Van Persie or Mata.
Di Maria could either play as a wide man in the front three or as an inside left central midfielder, both roles he has performed for Real Madrid and Benfica before that. Playing the 4-3-3 would make the most sense if Van Gaal were to use Di Mariaai??i??s strengths to the fullest. Playing as an out and out winger in a front three would make use of his excellent crossing ability, given his speed, something United have sorely missed, while playing him on the left side of the midfield would make use of his vision ai??i?? Di Maria had 2.7 key passes per game last season for Real Madrid.
Playing him as an inside left midfielder would also give United tempo, the lack of which was by far the easiest common denominator in the first three games of the season. From midfield, Di Maria has the ability to go on weaving runs past opponents, the sort of run that created the goal for Gareth Bale in the Champions League final not long ago. He is also an eager runner who closes down opponents fast and could give a hand to the left wing back defensively.
The obvious constraint of playing Di Maria in a three-man midfield is that the other two midfielders must be positionally sound and of a defensive nature should Di Maria be caught out. From the current lot, Carrick (when fit) and Cleverley (or Phil Jones) look to be those midfielders, not a comfortable prospect for United fans. This formation would also mean leaving Juan Mata out in the cold. Mata is not a winger, and was average in his role on the wing under the David Moyes regime. Rooney too might have to play as a wide left (or as a number 10 should Di Maria play in attack). Opportunities open up, though for Adnan Januzaj to play a role as a wide attacker in such a formation.
Scenario 3: Di Maria in a 4-3-1-2 formation
This formation is designed to keep all of Rooney, Van Persie, Juan Mata and Di Maria in the same starting eleven. It enables the use of Di Maria as an inside left midfielder, keeps Juan Mata in his preferred number 10 role and leaves Wayne Rooney and Van Persie to play up front together. It has all the strengths to succeed as an offshoot of the 3-4-1-2 formation Van Gaal wants to play with.
The obviously glaring drawback here is the absence of wide men. However, this could be countered by playing wing-backs up the pitch, with the central defensive midfielder (perhaps Phil Jones) covering for the attacking wing-back. With a disciplined attacking approach where only one wing back bombs forward, this formation could work wonders.
A big part of the problem against Sunderland was the lack of quality in getting the final ball to Van Persie, with the Dutch striker frozen out for long parts of the game. With Di Maria in midfield however, the urgency, tempo and that final killer ball will be available again for Van Persie and Rooney to feast upon. Van Gaal will also be able to make use of Juan Mataai??i??s playmaking skills in this formation.
Signing Di Maria may not have solved the biggest problems United have, but it certainly gives Louis van Gaal greater versatility, tempo, and undoubted quality in the squad. If United could now make two big signings in areas they absolutely do need to strengthen like central midfield and centre back (perhaps the likes of Vidal, Strootman or Hummels), the Louis van Gaal regime is good to bring happy days back to Greater Manchester. For now, we leave you with highlights from Di Maria’s performance in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, playing as an inside left midfielder.
