The new-look Manchester United team registered its first win of the season with a convincing performance against Queens Park Rangers as they thrashed the visitors 4-0 at Old Trafford.
Angel di Maria, the British record signing was at his very best and opened the scoring on his home debut. Fellow summer signing, Ander Herrera, was also on the scoresheet along with captain Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata. Radamel Falcao made his much waited appearance in a United jersey as a second half substitute.
Di Maria scored his first goal for the Red Devils through a free-kick and commented later that he had been practicing those. He said,Ai??”I’m very happy for my debut and a first goal. I have been practicing those free-kicks this week, so it is not a surprise for me.”
January arrival Juan Mata was also extremely delighted with his side’s imposing performance. He said, “We played much much better. From the beginning until the last minute we tried to score goals and that’s what we have to do with the players we have.Ai??It’s a very important win and it’s the first steps in a run of results, we hope.”
Manager van Gaal who now has his first win of the season was also delighted with the win and dedicated the win to his wife who celebrates her birthday today.
He said, “This is special because it is also the birthday of my wife. I have already given her a present but she said the biggest present shall be the victory. We give it to her.
“I think we can do much better. I said let’s make a new start. All the new players are playing.
“We have very intelligent players. The most important thing is not the system but the philosophy. Tyler Blackett is a little bit lucky because a lot of central defenders are injured. He made a very good performance but there are also other defenders still to come.”
Harry Redknapp was on the losing end of the game and felt that his side conceded poor first half goals which resulted in the eventual scoreline.
He said, “To be honest we came in and found ourselves 1-0 with five minutes until half-time. I thought if we came in at half time at 1-0 we’d be still in the game but we gave away two goals and came in at 3-0 despite Rob Green barely having a save to make.
“You know it is going to be tough at 3-0. You don’t want to get beat six or seven and it be demoralising.
“Some of our players need games. They need to get fit. But that is the problem with the international break. But we need to get them fit and playing.”
