Manchester City Season Review 2013-14: The Era Of The Sky-Blues

Here’s a look back at Manchester City’s moments and players that brought the title home, and the ones that nearly didn’t.

Ten years ago, a West London outfit with a new manager and an owner with deep-pockets, won back to back league titles signalling the dawn of a new era. No longer was the Premier League going to be a two-horse race between Manchester United and Arsenal.

Fast forward, a decade later, and with Manchester United and Arsenal on the wane, Liverpool on the ascent and Chelsea hanging on, it is Manchester City that have cemented their dominance of the English Premier League for the second time in 3 years. It’s going to take some mighty cynicism to deny the sky-blue dawn is well and truly upon us.

Aiming For The Stars

Manchester City started off this season with the possibility of the quadruple on the horizon. That was always going to be a tough ask, with Jose Mourinho back in charge at Chelsea, and England playing second fiddle to German and Spanish clubs in Europe. Strangely enough, the biggest threat to City’s Premier League ambitions came from surprise package Liverpool who pushed Pellegrini’s men to the limit, despite having a rather thin squad at their disposal.

Manchester City’s triumphs in the domestic league and the Capital One Cup may not quite be the fabled quadruple, but are a shot in the arm for Pellegrini as he looks to put Abu Dhabi’s plans for Premier League domination into action.

Captain Fantastic

Vincent Kompany is as talismanic to Manchester City as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are to their respective clubs. While the latter two have been wedded to their teams for considerably long terms, Kompany, whose association with his side began only in 2008, has what it takes to achieve a greater return in terms of Premier League titles in the coming years. Still only 28, Kompany shows incredible skill, athleticism and management skills to keep his team going. Little wonder then, the team looks effectively rudderless without him.

Their Best Player

Yaya Toure. Without a doubt. The Ivorian had long ago added himself to the list of talents to come out of the tiny African nation, but has firmly proved to everyone that he remains their best hope this World Cup. Operating in the less than glamorous position of central midfield, Toure still produced 24 goals in all competitions this season. Luis Suarez may have been picked as Player of the Season, but Sergio Aguero was arguably more effective given his fewer games, more efficient strike-rate, and success against the big sides.

If Toure is still regarded as having had a better season at Manchester City that Aguero did, then how he ended up not winning the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award says as much about the bias towards strikers as it does to the lack of glory players further down the pitch get to cover themselves in.

Dark Horses

Eden Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo had vastly different approaches to the season. Negredo raced out of the blocks, and was on 23 goals in all competitions just before injury struck his shoulder and left him on the sidelines. Negredo barely made an impact on his return and looks to be almost Torres-like in his descent.

Dzeko, on the other hand, was a prime candidate to leave Manchester City last year – having been reduced to 3rd choice striker. Pellegrini backing the under-appreciated star, clearly made all the difference as Dezko made up for the lesser number of goals with some crucially-timed contributions that kept City chugging along.

Little wonder then Jose Mourinho, famed for being uncharitable when it comes to players other than his own, doffed his hat to the Bosnian star, calling him the best and fairest player in the league. High praise, indeed.

Thorn in their side

Manchester City failed to beat Chelsea in two outings, and after the confetti has been swept away Pellegrini will do well to go back to the drawing board and figure out a way to get past the meanest defense in the League. Losing 0-1 at home, following an earlier 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge would have proven costly if their title rivals hadn’t gotten stuck in the mud as the season progressed.

The loss to Liverpool as the business end of the season caught on, in mid-April, certainly would have spooked the Mancunians but it is their twin losses to Chelsea that should be first on their areas of improvement.

Transfers

Fernandinho was a godsend to the team, clearly outshining the slower and more cumbersome duo of Nigel de Jong and Gareth Barry. At A?30million, he certainly didn’t come cheap and ran the risk of being an untested flop, but under Pellegrini’s guidance and a supportive team atmosphere he set the league alight. Martin Demichelis was a transfer who counts as among those who most improved over the season.

The biggest transfer flop was Stevan Jovetic, whose injury-blighted season, barely saw him start a game all season long. Jesus Navas has had his moments, but in a squad as stellar as Manchester City’s, he will need to watch his back.

The Icing On the Cake

This terrific season for Manchester City was only made better, in their eyes, by the complete and utter dismantling of Manchester United under the watchful gaze of David Moyes. As their crosstown rivals capitulated to one defeat after another, and plunged to mid-table positions hitherto never seen before, Manchester City’s ability to rise seldom came into question.

Even as Liverpool and Chelsea threatened to make the top spot theirs, Manchester City consistently did just more than enough to keep themselves in the running before stringing together a well-deserved series of wins, just as Liverpool and Chelsea stumbled at the very end.

Ruining the Party

It’s going to take a lot to ruin this season-end party, but the A?50-million fine for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations will certainly go some way to dampening their spirits. Manchester City have only themselves to blame, because this result was a long time coming. Along with PSG, Manchester City decided to sacrifice future muscling in the market for present success. City bet on a couple of big wins under their belt and some bank-busting purchases helping them tide over any punitive measures that might come into play in the future.

If the squad proves healthy enough to make the best of the next couple of seasons, without any additional purchases, City might shake this fine off like water off a duck’s back.
