Real Madridai??i??s 2-1 victory over Malaga took the teamai??i??s winning streak to a new record, going past the 15-match run that Jose Mourinho managed in the 2011-12 season and Miguel MuAi??oz in the 1960-61 campaign.
Real Madrid secured a club record 16th straight victory when Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale struck in a labored 2-1 win against Malaga last night that put them five points clear of second placed Barcelona in La Liga. Benzema turned home a Cristiano Ronaldo cross past the goalkeeper Carlos Kameni in the 18th minute while Bale secured the three points after rounding off a swift counter led by Ronaldo again. Former Malaga player Isco was sent off in the 86th minute and the hosts pulled a goal back when Roque Santa Cruz nodded past Iker Casillas but Real held on for the last couple of minutes to secure a historic win.
“I’m happy,” Ancelotti told reporters after the game at the Rosaleda. “This seems like a dream.
“We are very happy about the streak. I hope it continues. I will get some credit for this, but I’m lucky to train a fantastic team with fantastic players at a fantastic club.”
“But this is only part of a long season. The key is to keep working hard because in football the past is the past.”
Iker Casillas also admitted that it was unthinkable that Real Madrid would go on a club-record 16-game winning streak after a slow start to this season.
“We are very happy with the record,” the Madrid captain told reporters after Saturday’s 2-0 Liga win at Malaga. “We’ve reached 16 consecutive victories.”
“It’s almost unthinkable that we’ve gone two months without defeat. Our team has reacted well.”
“Itai??i??s always a very tough match here,ai??? the Real full-back Marcelo said. ai???We managed to beat the record but with a lot of work and commitment from the team. Our main objective is to carry on winning each game.”
Ronaldo failed to add to his tally of 26 goals in all competitions this season but his performance was satisfactory according to his manager.
“I really liked his performance,” the Italian enthused. He did a fantastic job and was the key to the game.”
“It’s rare that he does not score but he finished with two assists.”
Benzema took a knock but Ancelotti played down the severity of it claiming it was not serious.
“He got hit in the leg and he was a bit uncomfortable,” the former AC Milan boss explained. “That’s why I took him off.”
Real Madrid will now be hoping to extend their winning run when they face Cornella in the Copa del Rey at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
