Liverpool have been dealt a major blow after Daniel Sturridge suffered a new injury setback.
The Reds striker could be out for one more month after scans confirmed that he pulled his calf during training on Thursday. The 25-year-old was scheduled to make his comeback against QPR this Sunday but now faces another frustrating spell on the treatment table. He will definitely miss Wednesdayai??i??s blockbuster clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League.
“Daniel has pulled his calf,” Rodgers told the ECHO. “Heai??i??s looking at being out for another two to four weeks.”
“Itai??i??s a big blow as we were looking forward to welcoming Daniel back. He has worked tirelessly.”
“But we have other players training hard and working hard and we will turn to them. Itai??i??s why we bulked up the squad in the summer.”
Mario Balotelli has so far struggled to settle in his new club but Rodgers believes the Italian will deliver as Liverpool enter a crucial period of seven games in three weeks.
“Mario is doing his best,ai??? Rodgers said.
“He has worked very hard during the international break.He is a really good boy and is so keen to impress. Mario has worked like a lion over the past fortnight.Nobody is more determined than him to show his value and worth.”
The good news for Liverpool fans is Dejan Lovren has recovered from the abdominal injury while midfield duo Joe Allen and Emre Can could be back in action against QPR on Sunday.
“Dejan felt something and didnai??i??t want to aggravate it but heai??i??s fine now,ai??? Rodgers said.
“Joe is back training and looks fantastic. We will see how he goes over the next few days. Emre has been training all week and looks good. Sakho will be back in full training on Monday.”
Rodgers claimed that his side were only focusing on the QPR match this Sunday and is not looking further ahead than the game at Loftus Road.
“Our priority is the Premier League,” he said.
“Our biggest game is Sunday. There will be no thoughts of Real Madrid until after that.Weai??i??ve made an indifferent start in terms of performances and results but I am quite relaxed about it.I said we will see where weai??i??re at after 10 games. After seven games weai??i??re one point off the top four.”
